WhyEthiopiaWhere to next?
A land of contrasts that will leave you breathless
Ethiopia is a land of incredible cultural and natural diversity. And how could it not be, when within an area as large as ten Bulgarias lives the second most populous nation among all African countries. These lands are a stage for ancient and immensely rich history. Here, the oldest remains of the ancestors of modern humans have been found. Ethiopia is also one of the world's oldest independent countries and one of the first to embrace Christianity. On its soil, mighty empires have flourished, even resisting the colonial incursions of Europeans. Thus, for millennia, Ethiopia has been a crossroads of people, cultures, and trade.
It is also home to striking natural contrasts—from the harsh and cool mountains, which are among the highest in Africa, to one of the lowest plains on the planet, where, well below sea level, the highest annual temperatures on Earth have been recorded; from rows of large lakes strung like beads to barren deserts; from lush tropical forests to fantastical salt formations. Many of these extreme landscapes are blessed with an abundance of wildlife. Human traces are equally contrasting, ranging from ancient walled cities to the modern capital, which is one of the continent's most important economic, political, and artistic centres.
Is this journey meant for you?
Challenge
Comfort
Nature
Culture
In truth, there's not just one specific 'you' on this journey, as it's suitable for a variety of people.
For instance, accommodations will range from 5-star hotels to the most basic facilities, and even outdoors at a military base.
The same goes for experiences – we have the comfort of the capital city Addis Ababa, perched high in the mountains, but also endless barren and very hot places. Regardless, you must possess one trait – curiosity. Be curious about people, as we'll encounter various kinds, about animals (for the same reason), about nature, because it's incredibly diverse here.

About the Journey
Our journey will be just like Ethiopia itself – a kaleidoscope of experiences and vistas, as though blending several countries into one.
Its beginning and end will be in the capital Addis Ababa – a vibrant and colourful city, perched at an altitude higher than that of Cherni Vrah. From there, we'll head to one of the hottest places on Earth, amidst endless salt flats, dotted with ponds in surreal colours. Here, the power of the Earth's depths erupts in springs, geysers, and volcanoes. By the most active of these, we'll spend quite some time, mesmerised by the flowing lava. Then, we will return to civilisation (and a very ancient one at that), immersing ourselves in the streets of an antique city.
Our first encounters with African wildlife will be here, yet the grand spectacle in all its glory in their natural habitat is still to come. Such places are two of Ethiopia’s great lakes, which we will also visit. Even more thrilling will be the connection with the local people. We’ll learn more about them both around the lakes and in the famous Omo Valley. It's an incredible blend of cultures, traditions, clothing, and adornments, all seeming quite unusual to the European eye. Yet they help one to better feel the heart of Africa. And if you want to discover more about the journey itself, see the detailed day-by-day programme.

Itinerary
Day 1
Addis Ababa
Our Ethiopian journey begins in the capital, Addis Ababa. The city, whose name translates from Amharic as 'new flower', sits at an impressive 2355 meters above sea level, which means the temperature remains pleasant all year round — usually ranging between 9 and 23 degrees within a day.
Our first stop today will be the National Museum, which safeguards Ethiopia's artistic treasures. The museum also houses many valuable archaeological finds such as the fossilised remains of early hominids, the most famous being 'Lucy' — a partial skeleton of an Australopithecus afarensis specimen.
On this first day, we will also visit the oldest coffee shop in Addis Ababa. And Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. It is in the mountains of the southwestern part of the country that the endemic coffee tree Coffea arabica grows — the first cultivated coffee species, which is now grown worldwide and accounts for about 60% of the world’s coffee production. One legend tells how in the 9th century, an Ethiopian shepherd noticed one of his sheep acting unusually energetic after eating the red fruits of the tree (which actually resembles a bush) and brought them to a monk in a nearby monastery. He threw them into the fire, but a wonderful aroma spread, and the monks decided to grind the beans contained in the fruits and brew them. Thus, the first cup of coffee in the world was made.
And while we’re on the topic of local products, we’ll turn our attention to one of the markets here. In the evening, we’ll have the opportunity to truly enjoy Ethiopian cuisine for the first time at a local restaurant. And for the finale, we're staying at a 5-star hotel.
Day 2
The Hottest Place on Earth
The day begins with an early flight to Semera or Mekele (depending on flights), which is the starting point for our 6-hour car journey to the Danakil Desert; the travel time remains unchanged from the starting point. Here lies the hottest place on the planet on an annual basis. Between 1960 and 1966, in the now-defunct local town of Dallol, the world’s highest average annual temperature was recorded – 34.6 degrees Celsius. The average maximum daily temperature during this period was 41.2 degrees Celsius, and in the hottest month – June, it was 46.7 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature is 49 degrees Celsius, but according to some reports, nowadays in the Danakil Depression, as the area is also known (because it is about 125 meters below sea level), it even exceeds 50 degrees Celsius.
Besides being the hottest, Danakil is also one of the most vividly coloured places in the world. The surreal landscape is attributed to the sulfur, potash (a type of salt), and other minerals that saturate the Dallol hydrothermal field, peppered with hot springs, fissures, and geysers, and located amid the salt-crusted plains of Danakil. One of the lakes here is also the saltiest body of water on Earth.
We will visit bright green, hypersaline lakes and even have the chance to dip into one of the water-filled holes in the deep layers of salt. We will also see an entire canyon built from salt.
Our dinner will be prepared by a local chef travelling with us, and overnight accommodation will be in the open, under countless stars, at the local military base.
The second and third evenings, we will completely step out of our comfort zone and sleep on wooden beds in the desert under the open sky.
Day 3
Encounter with an Active Volcano
We will greet the sunrise and enjoy breakfast prepared by our Ethiopian chef, along with a small surprise from our hosts. After that, we have a journey of about 200 kilometres ahead, through local towns, the desert, and frozen lava.
The road is long, but it is worth it. Because the evening will be one of the brightest in our lives, both literally and metaphorically.
We will spend it near Ethiopia's most active volcano – Erta Ale. Here we will have the chance to witness the crater spewing lava, as it flows around.
Overnight stay in a tent near the volcano.
Day 4
Breakfast by the Volcano
Once again, we will greet the sunrise and have the chance to admire the volcano during the day. Breakfast will be served directly on the hardened lava.
Afterwards, we have about a 6-hour transfer to Semera or Mekele, the nearest airport from where we will catch a flight back to Addis Ababa. Dinner will be in a local restaurant, and we will stay overnight in a 5-star hotel.
Day 5
Ancient City and Animal Feeding
We'll catch an early flight to Dire Dawa, but our destination is another, much more ancient city. The less than 70 kilometres to it will take us approximately an hour and a half.
Harar is perched on a hill in eastern Ethiopia. For centuries, the city has been a significant trading hub, connected through caravan routes with the rest of Ethiopia, the entire Horn of Africa (a vast geopolitical region in the easternmost part of Africa, also known as the Somali Peninsula), the Arabian Peninsula, and through the ports of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea - with the entire world. We will spend the day exploring the old town - Harar Jugol, which is enclosed by fortress walls. Due to its immense cultural importance, UNESCO included it in its World Heritage List in 2006. According to Ethiopian law, the destruction or any other interference with local historic sites is a crime.
But aside from stone houses and museums, here we'll also encounter some awe-inspiring creatures. We'll get to feed eagles amidst the crowd at the market in the old town and after sunset – hyenas. Our overnight stay will be at a hotel that offers basic amenities, but it is the best in town.
Day 6
Exploring a Tropical Forest
We leave the hotel early and fly to the city of Arba Minch with a stopover in Addis Ababa. The name of the city in southern Ethiopia means "40 springs." It is located on the shores of Lake Abaya, and another lake, Chamo, is nearby.
Here, we will stay in a 5-star hotel with views of the endless tropical forest and lakes. We can devote the afternoon to relaxing, swimming in the pool, or visiting the spa centre. Dinner is also at the hotel.
Day 7
Lake excursion and visit to a local tribe
Today, we'll embark on a boat tour of Lake Abaya to witness its resident crocodiles and a variety of bird species. The lake is also a favourite fishing spot for the locals, with around 412 tonnes of fish caught annually. It is known for its unusual reddish hue, attributed to the floating sediments within.
On this day, we will also visit the first local tribe on our path. The Dorze are skilled weavers, creating vibrant traditional textiles. This ethnic group is also adept at crafting huts from the area's native bamboo, shaped like an elephant's head. Not only will we see them, but we will also try the local spirits and learn the traditional dances of the Dorze.
For dinner and overnight, we'll return to the hotel once more.
Day 8
The Omo Valley
For the next three days, we will spend time in the Omo Valley in southwestern Ethiopia. It is home to eight very distinct and unique tribes, numbering a total of about 200,000 people. Renowned for its deep traditions and incredible cultural diversity, this area has been a true crossroads for millennia. Today, each of the tribes has a unique language, clothing, food, and overall way of living.
Day 9
An extraordinary variety of ancient cultures
We will visit the villages of the Mursi, Dassanech, Hamar, and Bena ethnic groups, as well as the local markets where they trade goods, and the Omo National Park – one of the most isolated and challenging protected areas in the world, offering an exceptional concentration of wildlife.
Day 10
Running on the Bulls' Backs
If we're lucky, we'll witness the ancient coming-of-age ritual performed by the Hamar tribe. In it, between seven and ten bulls are lined up side by side, with their backs smeared with dung to make them slippery. Amidst the euphoric atmosphere created by those present and the cacophony of horn and bell sounds, the boy who wants to become a man must jump onto the back of the first bull and run from one end of the row to the other four times in total (twice in each direction), without falling. If he succeeds, he will be ready for marriage and able to own his own livestock.
In the area, we can't expect to find luxury hotels; instead, we’ll stay in houses with a basic level of comfort.
Day 11
Departure
Filled with lifelong impressions, we catch the flight from the city of Jinka to Addis Ababa, from where we head back home.

WHY TRAVEL WITH US?
Who are we?
Panic Frame & Travel is not a commercial travel agency. We don't offer you tranquility, tickets, or accommodation in an all-inclusive hotel with white tablecloths. We see ourselves as Tarzan tourists, organizing journeys to hard-to-reach places, encountering wild nature, and traveling by campers, catamarans, off-road jeeps, and even helicopters.
