Why Costa Rica?

The pure joy of life in the oasis of biodiversity

Welcome to the Rich Coast, as the country's name translates. Once so named for its abundance of gold, today Costa Rica enjoys another, even more priceless treasure – its exceptional biodiversity. The country occupies just 0.03% of the Earth's land surface (it's half the size of Bulgaria), but is home to about 5% of all animal and plant species in the world. And perhaps this lush nature is one of the reasons why the local people are among the happiest on the planet.

Central to their philosophy is the concept of 'Pura Vida' (literally translated as 'Pure Life') – the idea of simple living, without stress, with a positive and relaxed attitude towards the world. Costa Ricans fully enjoy each day and use the phrase 'Pura Vida' in a variety of contexts – as a substitute for 'hello' or in response to the question 'How are you?'. Come to Costa Rica, to experience the pure joy of life among probably the richest nature you will ever encounter.

Is this journey meant for you?

Rafting down a wild river in the jungles of Costa Rica

Day 1

Welcome to Costa Rica!

We land in San Jose, the capital of this small yet astonishing country. Our journey begins here. After the transfer to the hotel, we'll have time to relax and gear up for the adventures ahead. In the evening, we'll gather for a dinner featuring authentic Costa Rican food and start getting to know one another.

Day 2

The adventure begins! Poás Volcano or the Enkanto Waterfall

Today marks the beginning of our true adventure! After breakfast, we head out to collect our 4x4 jeeps, which will be our home on wheels for the next two weeks. On-site, we’ll receive instructions for using the equipment – tents, kitchen, everything necessary for life in the wild.

Our first stop will be one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica – Poás (2708 m). If we're lucky with the weather, we’ll glimpse its vast blue-green crater, one of the largest in the world. In case the fog conceals the volcano, we'll make our way to the Encanto waterfall, where we’ll enjoy a refreshing first contact with the water and a beautiful view just for us.

In the afternoon, we continue to our first campsite in the wilderness, where we’ll relish the sunset and share dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Trek in the Cloud Forest of Monteverde

This morning we venture into one of the most magical ecosystems on the planet – Santa Elena Cloud Forest. This place is a living museum of biodiversity – home to over 400 bird species, including the majestic quetzal, a symbol of freedom for the Mayans and Aztecs.

We'll stroll across hanging bridges above the jungle, hear the mysterious sounds of nature, and witness flora and fauna that cannot be seen anywhere else.

In the evening, we'll camp with a view of the mountain hills, and our host Fernando will greet us with traditional surprises!

Day 4

Off-road and Thermal River

Get ready for adrenaline! Today, we’ll cover 45 km off-road, crossing rivers, muddy tracks, and wild terrains along the picturesque Lake Arenal.

Once we arrive at our first accommodation spot, where we won't be spending the night in car tents, we can leave our luggage, enjoy lunch, and gaze at the majestic Arenal Volcano rising amidst the green jungle.

And in the afternoon – a well-deserved relaxation in a natural thermal river emerging straight from the Arenal Volcano. In the evening, pleasant chats await us, we'll order some food and savour the peace and comfort.

Day 5

Zipline over the jungle and trekking

Today's programme will begin with a slow morning, breakfast, and then we'll head out for a two-hour walk in the Monteverde jungle in search of even more flora and fauna—you won't want to miss it. Before lunch, however, we'll soar high above the jungle on a zipline—one of the most exhilarating experiences in Costa Rica. We'll fly at speeds over 60 km/h, crossing over 800 metres on one of the lines! Are you ready for a flight over the jungle?

After this thrilling adventure, we'll head to a local restaurant to enjoy a lunch filled with authentic Costa Rican flavours. The afternoon will be free, and for those who still have energy and thirst for more adventures, we'll offer alternative activities.

In the evening, we'll gather again for delightful conversations and a delicious local dinner, sharing impressions from the day.

Day 6

La Fortuna Waterfall and Alfonso's Mysterious Hideaway

Before we leave the Arenal area, we'll visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica – La Fortuna (70 m). Its waters cascade from volcanic rocks into a crystal-clear pool, perfect for a refreshing swim.

After that, we'll embark on a two-hour journey followed by a 30-minute off-road adventure across rivers and steep paths to reach Alfonso's secret hideaway – a little paradise hidden in the mountains. Our host will greet us with his homemade elixir, which strikingly resembles a well-known drink of ours.

We'll reserve the evening for a fascinating nocturnal experience with a local guide who will take us on a walk through the area, introducing us to the animals that emerge in the jungle at night.

Day 7

A day off in the mysterious haven of Alfonso

After breakfast, we will embark on a short stroll to the nearby waterfall, where we'll have the chance to dive into its refreshing waters. Afterwards, we'll gather for a communal lunch, and the afternoon will be free for various activities. In the area, you can go horse riding, zip-lining, and just a 20-minute drive away, there's a wildlife observation centre, where you can see different species of frogs, bats, and other exotic reptiles.

Day 8

By Boat Through the 'Little Amazon' – Tortuguero National Park

We'll rise before dawn, as today holds something special for us – Tortuguero, known as the 'Little Amazon'. This is the only national park in Costa Rica accessible solely by boat.

Through the park's canals, we'll spot monkeys, sloths, giant iguanas, caimans, crocodiles and dozens of exotic birds.

We'll climb the panoramic peak of Cerro Tortuguero, where we'll savour views of the endless jungles and the Caribbean Sea.

Our afternoon continues with lunch and a visit to Tortuguero Beach, a sacred place for sea turtles, which come here every year to lay their eggs.

If the weather favours us, our return by boat during sunset and later in the darkness will be etched in your memory for a long time, we guarantee.

Day 9

Free time with an offer for an unforgettable rafting experience on the Pacuare River

Today is an adrenaline day! We wake up early, gear up, and head towards the Pacuare River—one of the TOP 5 places in the world for rafting! We'll navigate through intense Class III and IV rapids, bouncing over rocks and swooshing down the river's flow, surrounded by impenetrable jungle.

For those who prefer to skip the rafting, there's the nearby sloth centre to visit, a waterfall close to where we’re staying, a cacao farm, or simply heading to the beautiful endpoint where we’ll be sleeping tonight.

Day 10

Coffee Farm and we head to the Pacific Ocean

After breakfast, we head to a traditional Costa Rican coffee farm, where we'll discover how one of the finest coffees in the world is grown and processed. We'll sample freshly roasted coffee, prepared using traditional methods.

Next, we embark on a section of the legendary Pan-American Highway, which connects the northernmost reaches of America to the distant south of Argentina.

On our journey, we'll climb to over 3,300 metres above sea level, crossing impressive mountain peaks along the highest paved road in Central America. From there, we'll continue to our final destination for the day – the campsite in close proximity to the Nauyaca Waterfalls.

Day 11

The Pacific Beaches of Dominical

After breakfast, we head to the Nauyaca Waterfalls – the last waterfall of our Costa Rican adventure, yet one of the most spectacular.

A one-hour trek through dense tropical forest will lead us to this majestic cascade, where water tumbles down the rocks like a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by lush greenery.

After a brief time to enjoy the view and a chance to refresh, we continue to our next stop – Uvita Park. This magical place is known for its unique sandbar, which at low tide resembles a whale's tail – a symbolic coincidence, since humpback whales come here every year to give birth to their calves. Wandering through the golden beaches and coastal jungle will give us the chance to feel the magic of this place, where land and ocean blend into one.

With senses soaked with the sea breeze, we head to our final stop of the day – the wild region of Bejuco, where we will spend our last nights under the stars, in tents, surrounded by the untouched nature of Costa Rica.

Day 12

The Crocodiles Over the Tárcoles River

Our day will start slowly and leisurely, with a view of the endless ocean and the aroma of freshly baked tropical fruits. We'll enjoy our last breakfast in nature before sipping the final gulps of morning tranquillity by the shore. There will be plenty of time to soak up the sun's final rays, stroll along the beach, or simply dive into the refreshing waves.

After lunch, we'll dismantle our tents for the last time, holding on to the sense of adventure, and head back towards San Jose. On the way, we’ll make a short stop at the bridge over the Tarcoles River, one of the best spots to observe the giant crocodiles basking on the riverbank.

We will then continue to our final destination to drop off the cars. From there, we'll be taken to the hotel, where we’ll have time for a short rest.

In the evening, we’ll celebrate the end of our Costa Rican adventure with dinner at a typical local restaurant, where we’ll taste authentic flavours and share our last impressions of this unforgettable journey.

Day 13

Back home, with a soul full of adventures!

After breakfast, we will have free time to explore the small yet vibrant neighbourhood of San José, Alajuela. We can leave our suitcases at the hotel and wander for souvenirs, lunch, culture, and other intriguing things in the area.

* Panic Frame & Travel reserves the right to adapt and change the program according to changes in accommodation conditions, climate, and other factors that require it.

Is it safe in Costa Rica, and what language is spoken?

In the country, the official language is Spanish, but a large part of the tourist flow comes from North America, making it easy to find English speakers. For this reason, the country is among the safest destinations to visit in both Central and South America. It is a world leader in eco-friendly tourism.

Are vaccines needed?

There are no mandatory vaccines for Costa Rica. Some are recommended, but they're optional. Consult your personal doctor for the latest recommendations.

What documents do I need for Costa Rica?

Bulgarian citizens can enter Costa Rica without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes. A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining until expiration and a return plane ticket are required.

What's the currency and how much money should I carry with me?

The local currency is the Colón. In some places, you can also pay with US Dollars.

It's recommended to have cash on hand, but paying by card is possible in many places across the country.

We'd advise you to have around $500 with you for buying food and covering other expenses during your journey.

What's the weather like in Costa Rica?

Tropical climate, warm all year round. Dry season (December-April): best for travel, little rain. Rainy season (May-November): afternoon downpours, but mornings are usually sunny. Coastal temperatures: 24-29°C. San José (at 1200 m): around 21°C, "eternal spring." The Caribbean side is wetter year-round.

Can you get mobile service and internet access?

You can purchase local mobile cards with internet. If someone wants to do it in advance, Holafly is a convenient option, but the prices are higher.

Can I fly a drone in Costa Rica?

Drones are regulated by the DGAC. Registration is required. In national parks (Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Tortuguero), flights are prohibited without special permission. Only flights within direct sight and during the day are allowed. Penalties range from fines to confiscation. Check specific rules in advance.
