Are you ready for Panic Costa Rica?

Embark on a thrilling 14-day journey across Costa Rica, where you'll witness majestic volcanoes, wild animals, picturesque jungles, overflowing rivers, and waterfalls up close. You'll soar through the tall trees on a zipline, cruise down exhilarating rapids on an inflatable boat, admire Costa Rica from a helicopter's vantage point, and unwind on idyllic, secluded beaches.

The jeep will be your reliable mobile home, and you'll have the option to choose whether to sleep on the roof or inside its trailer. Enjoy unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, each uniquely breathtaking since you'll camp at a new stunning location almost every night. Of course, you won't just view the world from the car window—the journey includes plenty of hiking, followed by delicious local dishes to refuel your energy.

Day 1

Welcome to Costa Rica!

We touch down in San José, the capital of this small but breathtaking country. Our journey begins here. After checking into our hotel, we'll have time to unwind and gear up for the adventures ahead. In the evening, we'll gather for a dinner of authentic Costa Rican food and start getting to know each other.

Day 2

The adventure begins! Poás Volcano or the Enkanto Waterfall

Today, the real adventure begins! After breakfast, we head off to pick up our 4x4 rigs – our homes on wheels for the next two weeks. We'll get a full run-down on how to use all the expedition gear: rooftop tents, the camp kitchen, and everything else we need for life in the wild.

Our first stop is one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes – Poás (2,708 m). If the weather is on our side, we'll peer into its massive, glowing blue-green crater, one of the largest on Earth. If the mountain mist hides the view, we'll pivot to El Encanto waterfall for a refreshing first dip and a stunning viewpoint all to ourselves.

In the afternoon, we press on to our first wild campsite to catch the sunset and share our first dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Trek in the Cloud Forest of Monteverde

This morning, we venture into one of the most magical ecosystems on the planet – the Santa Elena Cloud Forest. This place is a living museum of biodiversity, home to over 400 bird species, including the majestic quetzal, a symbol of freedom for the Maya and Aztecs.

We will wander along suspension bridges high above the jungle canopy, tune into the mysterious sounds of the wild, and witness flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth.

As night falls, we will camp with views stretching across the mountain ridges, and our host Fernando will welcome us with some traditional surprises!

Day 4

Off-road and Thermal River

Gear up for a rush of adrenaline! Today we tackle 45 km of off-road terrain, splashing through rivers, navigating muddy tracks, and conquering wild trails along the scenic Lake Arenal.

Once we reach our first lodge—taking a break from our rooftop tents tonight—we'll drop our gear, grab some lunch, and gaze up at the mighty Arenal Volcano rising high above the lush jungle canopy.

This afternoon is all about well-earned relaxation. We'll soak in a natural thermal river fed directly by the Arenal Volcano. As night falls, we'll share stories, grab some local food, and sink into the peaceful jungle vibes.

Day 5

Zipline over the jungle and trekking

Today starts with a slow morning and a hearty breakfast before we head out for a two-hour trek into the Monteverde cloud forest. The wildlife here is legendary, so keep your eyes peeled. But before we break for lunch, we’re taking things to new heights. Get ready to soar high above the canopy on one of Costa Rica’s most thrilling ziplines. We’ll be flying at speeds of over 60 km/h, with one of the lines stretching over 800 metres! Ready to fly over the jungle?

After that adrenaline rush, we’ll head to a local spot to fuel up on authentic Costa Rican flavours. The afternoon is yours to spend as you wish. If you’ve still got energy to burn and want to keep exploring, we’ve got plenty of ideas to keep the adventure going.

In the evening, we’ll gather back together over a delicious local dinner to share stories and unwind after an incredible day.

Day 6

La Fortuna Waterfall and Alfonso's Mysterious Hideaway

Before leaving the Arenal region, we will visit one of Costa Rica's most stunning waterfalls – La Fortuna (70 m). Its waters plunge down volcanic cliffs into a crystal-clear pool, absolutely perfect for a refreshing swim.

Next, we face a two-hour drive followed by a 30-minute off-road adventure through rivers and steep trails to reach Alfonso’s secret hideaway – a small paradise tucked away in the mountains. Our host will welcome us with his homemade elixir, which tastes strikingly like a very familiar brew of our own.

We are saving the evening for an incredible night safari with a local guide, who will lead us through the area to encounter the creatures that come alive in the jungle after dark.

Day 7

A day off in the mysterious haven of Alfonso

After breakfast, we'll take a short hike to a nearby waterfall, where you can dive into its refreshing, cool waters. Afterward, we'll gather for a group lunch, leaving the afternoon wide open for your own adventures. The area offers horse riding and zip-lining, and just a 20-minute drive away is a wildlife conservation centre where you can spot various species of frogs, bats, and other exotic reptiles.

Day 8

By Boat Through the 'Little Amazon' – Tortuguero National Park

We’ll be up before sunrise because something truly special awaits today – Tortuguero, often called the "little Amazon". This is the only national park in Costa Rica accessible solely by boat.

As we navigate the park's winding canals, we'll spot monkeys, sloths, massive iguanas, caimans, crocodiles, and dozens of exotic birds.

We will hike up to the panoramic viewpoint of Cerro Tortuguero, rewarding us with sweeping views over the endless jungles and the Caribbean Sea.

We continue our afternoon with lunch and a visit to Tortuguero Beach, a sacred nesting ground where sea turtles return year after year to lay their eggs.

If the weather is on our side, our return boat journey through the dusk and into the dark will stay etched in your memory for a lifetime – we guarantee it.

Day 9

Free time with an offer for an unforgettable rafting experience on the Pacuare River

Today is all about the adrenaline! We wake up early, gear up, and head to the Pacuare River – one of the top 5 rafting spots on the planet. We'll conquer wild class III and IV rapids, bouncing off rocks and surging downstream through a canyon wrapped in impenetrable jungle.

If rafting isn't your thing, you can visit a nearby sloth sanctuary, hike to a waterfall just steps from our lodge, tour a cacao farm, or simply head straight to tonight's beautiful campsite and unwind.

Day 10

Coffee Farm and we head to the Pacific Ocean

After breakfast, we head to a traditional Costa Rican coffee farm to see how one of the world's finest coffees is grown and processed. We will taste freshly roasted coffee brewed using traditional methods.

Next, we hit a stretch of the legendary Pan-American Highway, the road that connects the northernmost reaches of America with the far south of Argentina.

Along the way, we will climb over 3,300 metres above sea level, crossing imposing mountain peaks on the highest paved road in Central America. From there, we push on to our final destination for the day – camping right by the Nauyaca Waterfalls.

Day 11

The Pacific Beaches of Dominical

After breakfast, we set off for the Nauyaca Waterfalls – the final waterfall of our Costa Rican adventure, and easily one of the most spectacular.

A one-hour trek through the dense rainforest brings us to this majestic cascade, where the water tumbles down the cliffs like a natural amphitheatre wrapped in lush greenery.

After taking in the views and enjoying a refreshing dip, we head to our next stop: Uvita Park. This magical spot is famous for its unique sandbar, which shapes itself into a whale's tail at low tide. It's a fitting coincidence, as humpback whales travel here every year to give birth to their calves. Wandering along the golden beaches and coastal jungle, we'll feel the raw magic of a place where the earth meets the wild ocean.

With our senses filled with the salty sea breeze, we make our way to our final stop of the day – the wild region of Bejuco. Here, we'll spend our final nights under the stars, sleeping in tents amidst Costa Rica’s untouched wilderness.

Day 12

The Crocodiles Over the Tárcoles River

Our day starts slow and easy, waking up to views of the endless ocean and the scent of freshly roasted tropical fruits. We'll savour our final breakfast in the wild, soaking in the last moments of morning calm by the shore. There will be plenty of time to catch some final rays of sun, stroll along the beach, or plunge into the refreshing waves.

After lunch, we pack up our tents one last time, holding onto that raw sense of adventure, and head back towards San José. Along the way, we’ll make a quick stop at the Tarcoles River bridge—one of the best spots to watch giant crocodiles basking in the sun below.

From there, we press on to our final stop to drop off the cars, before a transfer takes us to our hotel for a quick chance to freshen up.

In the evening, we’ll celebrate the end of our Costa Rican expedition with dinner at a local spot, tasting authentic dishes and raising a glass to an unforgettable journey.

Back home, with a soul full of adventures!

After breakfast, we will have free time to explore the small yet vibrant neighbourhood of San José, Alajuela. We can leave our suitcases at the hotel and wander for souvenirs, lunch, culture, and other intriguing things in the area.

Once we confirm the dates, we'll send you the contract, insurance, and invoice. You'll pay a 50% deposit, and the remaining balance is due 45 days before departure.

A month before the expedition, we'll remind you about the journey with a detailed email filled with insights about the destination, flights, and more.

Included in the price:

Flight tickets from Sofia to San Jose and back, including standard hand luggage and a checked suitcase up to 23 kg.

All accommodation as detailed in the itinerary: 7 nights in hotels and 5 nights under the stars

All the activities described in the programme

All breakfasts during the programme

Departure fee from the airport: $29

Is it safe in Costa Rica, and what language is spoken?

In the country, the official language is Spanish, but a large part of the tourist flow comes from North America, making it easy to find English speakers. For this reason, the country is among the safest destinations to visit in both Central and South America. It is a world leader in eco-friendly tourism.

Are vaccines needed?

There are no mandatory vaccines for Costa Rica. Some are recommended, but they're optional. Consult your personal doctor for the latest recommendations.

What documents do I need for Costa Rica?

Bulgarian citizens can enter Costa Rica without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes. A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining until expiration and a return plane ticket are required.

What's the currency and how much money should I carry with me?

The local currency is the Colón. In some places, you can also pay with US Dollars.

It's recommended to have cash on hand, but paying by card is possible in many places across the country.

We'd advise you to have around $500 with you for buying food and covering other expenses during your journey.

What's the weather like in Costa Rica?

Tropical climate, warm all year round. Dry season (December-April): best for travel, little rain. Rainy season (May-November): afternoon downpours, but mornings are usually sunny. Coastal temperatures: 24-29°C. San José (at 1200 m): around 21°C, "eternal spring." The Caribbean side is wetter year-round.

Can you get mobile service and internet access?

You can purchase local mobile cards with internet. If someone wants to do it in advance, Holafly is a convenient option, but the prices are higher.

Can I fly a drone in Costa Rica?

Drones are regulated by the DGAC. Registration is required. In national parks (Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Tortuguero), flights are prohibited without special permission. Only flights within direct sight and during the day are allowed. Penalties range from fines to confiscation. Check specific rules in advance.
