Kитай

From the Forbidden City to the Avatar Mountains, from the Terracotta Army of Xi'an to the neon skyline of Hong Kong.

Why Kитай?

Empire, mountains, and megacities in one journey.

China is not just a country. China is a civilization gathered in one place, with layers upon layers built over millennia. Beijing welcomes you with the vastness of the Forbidden City and the serenity of temple gardens. Xi'an takes you back 2200 years in front of an army of 8000 clay soldiers, each with a unique face. Then comes Huashan, the sacred mountain that you climb by steps carved into the rock.

Zhangjiajie is something different. Stone pillars rising from the mist like a scene from a sci-fi movie. This is where James Cameron found the planet Pandora. We'll wander across it for two days.

And finally, Hong Kong. Skyscrapers that glow from dusk till dawn. Funicular to Victoria Peak. Light show from the deck of the Star Ferry. The contrast between the ancient north and the ultra-modern south is so stark that you feel like you're crossing from one era to another with every train.

16 days. 5 cities. Thousands of years of history packed into a journey that begins with the stones of the Great Wall and ends in the lights of Hong Kong.

Is this journey meant for you?

China beckons if you're...

If history fascinates you as much as nature does, here you will find both on a scale you haven't seen before.

If you want to stand on the Great Wall when tourists have left and only the wind remains.

If you're shooting and looking for shots that seem impossible, Zhangjiajie will provide them.

If you love food and aren't afraid of the unknown, here every day is a new taste.

If you think that a single day can't include an ancient temple and a neon rooftop bar, Hong Kong will prove you wrong.

If you want a journey where the distance between 2000-year-old history and the future is just a train ride away.

Ancient Power

The Great Wall, when no one is around

We ascend a section of the Wall far from the tourist routes. The stones are rough, the steps uneven, and the horizon opens up in all directions. Something about the scale of this construction compels you to stop and be silent.

Built over 2,000 years, more than 20,000 kilometres long. We will see only a small part, but it is enough.

Another Planet

The Mountains that Inspired Avatar

Stone pillars rising hundreds of metres above the mist. Trails clinging to the edge of the abyss. A glass bridge 300 metres above the ground. A 326-metre lift glued to the rock face.

Two days in a national park that looks as if nature has decided to show what it can really do.

Stone and Faith

Terracotta Army and Sacred Mountain

8,000 clay soldiers, each with a unique face, buried for 2,200 years and accidentally discovered by a villager digging a well. A Muslim quarter where the streets are filled with the aroma of spices and grilled meats.

And the next day, Huashan. A sacred mountain with paths carved into the rock, temples perched on the edges, and views that will take your breath away.

Light and Elevation

Hong Kong, the city that never sleeps

Victoria Peak at sunset, when the city ignites below. Star Ferry across the harbour, as skyscrapers put on a light show. Street markets, dim sum for breakfast and rooftop bars with a 360-degree panorama.

The contrast between mainland China and Hong Kong is so stark that you feel like you're moving between two different realities.

Itinerary

Day 1

Peking

We touch down in the Chinese capital, a city where ancient history and modern life surround us at every turn. Once we've checked in to the hotel, we have free time to relax or take a short walk nearby. In short, it's time to feel that 'I'm in China' sensation.

The day will end with a group dinner, during which we will have an introduction to what awaits us in the coming days.

Day 2

Behind the Walls of 24 Dynasties

In the morning, we step through the gates of the Forbidden City, a former imperial residence with over 900 buildings and 24 dynasties of history. Then, we visit the White Pagoda from the 13th century, rising above Beihai Lake, a tranquil haven amidst the bustling city.

The day's programme will conclude with an incredible sunset over the Forbidden City.

Day 3

Gardens, Sky, and Tai Chi

We visit the Summer Palace, a masterpiece of classical Chinese architecture, surrounded by a lake and gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest and best-preserved imperial garden in China. Exploring its entire area can take hours.

In the afternoon, we dedicate our time to the Temple of Heaven, elegant and perfectly symmetrical, a site of former imperial rituals. And as we make our way there, if we're lucky, we might encounter locals practicing tai chi and traditional games in the park.

Dinner in a pleasant atmosphere after an active day.

Day 4

The Wall

Early in the morning, we set off towards one of the most impressive sections of the Great Wall of China. It is our next UNESCO site in China, and you'll be able to tick off one of the 8 wonders of the world. Our walk along the ancient stones with an endless horizon before us is a moment that's hard to forget and one we've dreamed of for many years.

It was constructed over 2000 years, and its total length exceeds 20,000 kilometres. However, we will see only a very small part of it, sparing you the rest. The afternoon after our return to Beijing will be free. Dinner and well-deserved rest.

Day 5

The Silk Road

A midday flight takes us to Xi'an, the ancient capital at the start of the Silk Road. Upon arrival, we have free time to stroll along the old city walls, explore the bustling and shop-filled centre, or simply relax. Dinner with the group.

Day 6

8,000 Warriors of Clay

With private transport, we head towards one of the greatest symbols of China: the Terracotta Army. With an English-speaking local guide, we'll embark on a comprehensive tour to grasp the context and true value of the site. We'll uncover why it's so vast, how it was crafted in such a short span, and what parts we can no longer witness. This site is a remarkable achievement of Chinese artisans.

In the afternoon, we return and immerse ourselves in the Muslim Quarter. Bathed in light, rich in scents and culinary delights, we'll savour extremely delicious food and soak up the vibrant atmosphere that fills the streets of this extraordinary district.

Day 7

Huashan

After an early breakfast, we board a high-speed train and after just a few stops, we find ourselves at Huashan, a mountain straight out of a Chinese painting: sharp peaks, paths along its steep edges, and views that can send shivers down your spine. It is one of China's five sacred mountains and the steepest. From the base, we ascend by cable car that overcomes more than 1600 metres in height.

We'll explore the various hills with temples, climb hundreds of stairs, but each one will be worth it for the views from this mountain. After the thrilling ascent, we return to Xi'an for one last night in the city.

Day 8

Before the Movie

Breakfast and transfer to the airport. An afternoon flight to Changsha, followed by a high-speed train to Zhangjiajie. Upon arrival, hotel check-in and a free afternoon—time to stretch and mentally prepare: tomorrow marks the start of the most cinematic part of our journey.

We arrive in the afternoon and have free time until dinner.

Day 9

999 Steps

After breakfast, we head to the mountain with the world's longest mountain lift, 7.5 kilometres. During the 20-minute ascent, we'll relish views of the mountain and the serpentine road, used for all types of extreme sports.

Next, we'll take on the famous 999 steps to the "Heaven's Gate", a natural opening in the rock. We continue to the summit and complete a circular route with breathtaking panoramas. Nearly the entire day is dedicated to this experience. In the late afternoon, we return to the hotel, with the evening free for everyone to enjoy as they wish.

Day 10

The Mountains of Avatar

Today the day will be like a postcard you want to send to every nature-loving friend. This park is a realm of stone pillars and misty forests. It's no wonder James Cameron chose it as inspiration for his famous production, Avatar. Some of these natural columns reach over 200 metres in height.

We ascend by lift to the upper part and move around by buses, as the park is very large and not everywhere can be accessed on foot. In the afternoon, we descend using the famous Bailong Elevator, which, at 326 metres high, is the tallest outdoor lift in the world.

We stay overnight in one of the few hotels in the park with a wonderful view, situated right in the nature park.

Day 11

Fog, Monkeys, and Serenity

Free day. We can enjoy the views from the hotel or take a walk through the lower part of the park, where the rock formations that inspired the movie Avatar rise among the greenery. There are numerous trails, each more remarkable than the last.

We will also encounter the local monkeys, from whom we must be cautious, as they are quite mischievous. In the evening, a group dinner with a magnificent view.

Day 12

Ruins Under a Glass Floor

After a hearty breakfast, we head to Chongqing, from where we fly directly to Guangzhou, the vibrant capital of southern China and the heart of Guangdong Province. We arrive in the afternoon and immediately feel the city's modern pulse, mixed with the scents of tea and traditional cuisine.

We take a stroll along the famous Beijing Road shopping street, where the ancient ruins of the old city whisper quietly below the glass floors, while shop windows, neon lights, and life shine above them. The day ends with a delicious dinner and well-deserved rest.

Day 13

602 meters above the river

After breakfast, we set off to explore the city where East meets West in the most unexpected ways. We stroll around Shamian Island, a former European concession now filled with romantic architecture, embassies, shady avenues, and cosy cafes.

We continue to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. This exquisite complex is filled with buildings boasting wood carvings, ceramic ornaments, and richly decorated roofs, showcasing the full mastery of traditional Chinese architecture.

In the evening, we head to the Canton Tower. This tower is one of the tallest structures in Asia (602 meters), where we watch as the Pearl River reflects the sunset over the city. The illuminated Guangzhou below us is a fairy-tale sight. We end the day with a shared dinner.

Day 14

Hong Kong from Above

Today we journey by express train to Hong Kong, a city that never sleeps, skillfully blending skyscrapers, mountains, and sea. We ascend to Victoria Peak, one of the most iconic symbols of the city, via the historic tram. From here, the view over Victoria Harbour and the cityscape is breathtaking.

Next, we'll take a ride on the impressive double-decker trams, a symbol of the island part of Hong Kong. In the evening, we enjoy the Symphony of Lights, when the entire city comes alive with light and music.

Day 15

The final night is a symphony

Last full day to explore Hong Kong on your own terms: wander through Central, visit markets, museums, or simply watch the street life unfold.

As the sun sets, we board the famous Star Ferry, where we watch the skyscraper lights dance upon the waves. Our dinner is special, the final celebration, brimming with emotions from our experiences.

Day 16

Back

After a final breakfast with the group, we head to the airport for our flight to Sofia. We bid farewell to China, carrying with us the feeling of having traversed an entire world, one where the ancient and the future live in perfect harmony.

What documents do I need for China?

For a journey to China, Bulgarian citizens need a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry) and a visa. The visa is obtained from the Chinese embassy in Sofia. The process usually takes 5-7 working days. We will send you detailed instructions and assistance for preparing the documents.

What is the process for obtaining a Chinese visa?

The visa for China is obtained from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Sofia. Required documents: completed visa application form, photo, copy of airline tickets and hotel reservations (we provide these), copy of the passport. The fee is approximately 120 EUR. We recommend starting the process at least 4-6 weeks before your trip.

Is there internet in China? Do you need a VPN?

Yes, China does have internet, but access to Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and most western apps is blocked by the so-called Great Firewall. To use them, you need to install a VPN app BEFORE departure. Once you arrive in China, you won't be able to download it.

In Hong Kong, there are no such restrictions and the internet is completely free.

We'll send you recommendations for reliable VPN apps before your journey.

What currency is used in China and how do I make payments?

The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). In major cities, bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in hotels and larger stores, but for markets, street food, and smaller establishments, it's good to have cash. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) is used and bank cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Currency exchange can be done at the airport or in banks. We recommend exchanging a small amount upon arrival.

What level of physical fitness is needed?

The journey includes walks of 3 to 6 hours per day on urban and mountainous terrain. The most challenging days are the ascent of the sacred Huashan Mountain (height 2100m, with a cable car covering much of the altitude) and the hikes in Zhangjiajie. No special alpine training is required, but a normal physical condition and a desire for walking are essential.

We recommend regular cardio activity at least 2-3 times a week in the months leading up to the trip.

What's included in the price of the journey?

The price includes: international flight Sofia-Beijing, domestic flights (Beijing-Xi'an, Zhangjiajie-Guangzhou), high-speed trains (Xi'an-Huashan, Changsha-Zhangjiajie, Guangzhou-Hong Kong), 15 nights in hotels, 15 breakfasts and 8 dinners, all entrance fees for sites included in the program, all transfers and local transportation, a Bulgarian-speaking guide throughout the journey, and medical insurance.

Not included: Chinese visa (~120 EUR), return flight from Hong Kong, meals not mentioned in the program, personal expenses, alcohol, and drinks.

What's the weather like in China in May?

May is one of the best months to visit China. In Beijing, temperatures are around 18-28°C with low humidity. Xi'an is similar, 16-26°C. In Zhangjiajie, it can be wetter and foggier (18-25°C), which actually makes the landscapes even more cinematic. Guangzhou and Hong Kong are warmer and more humid, 25-32°C, with the possibility of brief afternoon showers.

Layered clothing is essential due to the temperature difference between northern and southern China.

What is the difference between Mainland China and Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China with its own set of rules. Bulgarian citizens do not need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days in Hong Kong (unlike mainland China). The currency is different (Hong Kong dollar instead of yuan). The internet is open, with no need for a VPN. Bank cards are accepted everywhere.

When crossing from mainland China to Hong Kong, we pass through a border control similar to an international one.

Is the food safe? Are there options for dietary restrictions?

Chinese cuisine is diverse and delicious. The food in the restaurants and hotels we visit is safe. At street markets (like the Muslim Quarter in Xi'an), we recommend food that is freshly cooked and hot.

If you have specific dietary restrictions (vegetarianism, allergies), please let us know in advance, and we will arrange alternatives. In larger cities, there are plenty of options available.

Are vaccinations needed for China?

No mandatory vaccinations are required to enter China from Bulgaria. It is advisable to be up to date with your routine vaccinations (hepatitis A and B, tetanus). Consult your doctor or the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases for the latest recommendations.

What's the deal with mobile networks and SIM cards?

We recommend getting a local SIM card or eSIM for China upon arrival, so you have mobile internet. Prices are affordable. Important: Mobile internet in China is also behind the Great Firewall, so a VPN is necessary on your phone as well.

In Hong Kong, you can use roaming or get a separate SIM card. There are no internet restrictions there.

Is there a language barrier in China?

The official language is Mandarin (Putonghua). In tourist areas and hotels, the staff usually speak basic English. In smaller places and markets, language might be a challenge, but not a problem, because you have a guide with you. In Hong Kong, English is widely spoken.

It's useful to have a translation app on your phone (download it before departure, as Google Translate is blocked in China unless you have a VPN).

Ready for an adventure?

China in May means a temperature difference of 15 degrees between Beijing and Guangzhou. Layered clothing is a must. In the north, it's dry and pleasant, while in the south, it's warm and humid. The mountains call for comfortable shoes and a raincoat.

Tick off the essentials from the list and make sure you haven't missed anything. Most importantly: install a VPN before departure.
