Why Kyrgyzstan?

Where Beauty Has No Name

Kyrgyzstan. Unknown. Relentlessly harsh. Unthinkably beautiful. A country untouched by the tourist crowds, where even locals rarely wander. That's why some of its most beautiful places until recently didn't even have names.

However, we will be in experienced hands there. We’ll be in the company of videographer Martin Grahovski, the creator of the film Kyrgyzstan – A Cinematic Diary. We'll roam among majestic mountains and dizzying valleys, vast lakes and mighty rivers. We'll watch the flight of hunting eagles and lose ourselves in the boundless expanses. To find ourselves again.

And, captivated by the colours of the endless wilderness, where wild horses and Kyrgyz nomads roam, we will dream of the next time when we'll immerse ourselves in the fantastic landscapes of the Central Asian country, whose name translates to Land of the Forty Tribes.

If the answer to even one of these questions is "yes", then Kyrgyzstan is just right for you. There, you'll sleep in a yurt, ride horses, sample the local cuisine, and your soul will be nourished by the breathtaking landscapes of this Central Asian country.

Lakes and Mountains

The main characters in this journey will be several glacial, freshwater, and salt lakes, one of which is the second largest mountain lake in the world after Titicaca. The high mountain passes, which you will cross on foot, horseback, and by car, are truly awe-inspiring. In the Switzerland of Central Asia, as Kyrgyzstan is sometimes called due to its terrain, you will visit the capital, whose name means Mountain that Brings Happiness, and a ghost town; the Fairy Tale Canyon and a pasture called Carpet in translation; the Seven Bulls rocks and the Maiden's Braids waterfall. And who knows, you might even come up with an even more romantic name for this exhilarating adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek)

A shuttle from the airport will take you to your hotel. Since you arrive early, you can use the day to rest or explore the Kyrgyzstan capital on your own. The city, whose name means Mountain of Happiness, is nestled at the foot of the Kyrgyz Range. Among its main attractions are the City Hall, the Kyrgyz Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Kyrgyz State Historical Museum. In the evening, we'll dine together and get to know each other. The next day, we'll head to our camp, made up of traditional yurts.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 30 km/40 minutes).

Day 2

Build your own yurt before eagle hunting (Bokonbaevo)

Today, we journey to a camp with authentic yurts, located on the southern shore of the saline Lake Issyk Kul – the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and the seventh deepest globally. In Kyrgyz, its name means "warm lake," which is quite paradoxical, given it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Nonetheless, it never freezes.

Here, we will witness an extraordinarily fascinating demonstration of yurt-making, involving the whole group. Our tutor will be a local craftsman from the village of Kyzyl-Tuu, renowned for its production of traditional Kyrgyz yurts.

Eagle hunting is part of the ancient culture of nomadic civilizations, so we can't wait to show you this too. The tradition originated in Central Asia, where nomads began taming birds thousands of years ago to gather food and furs during the winter months. Today, this age-old tradition is slowly fading, but Kyrgyzstan is one of the few countries where a handful of experienced hunters keep it alive.

Ruslan, a renowned professional eagle hunter, will demonstrate how they would hunt in the wild. Since we are staying in a yurt camp, dinner will also be here.

Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 290 km/4 hours).

Day 3

A Fairytale Landscape and the Legend of the Seven Bulls (Karacol)

On the third day, our journey takes us to the town of Karakol, located on the southern shore of Lake Issyk Kul. Along the way, we have the chance to visit the Fairy Tale Canyon, a breathtaking and mystical place named for its whimsical landscape that resembles Mars. Some formations look like snakes, dragons, or even the Great Wall of China. The canyon offers a majestic panorama of Lake Issyk Kul.

Karakol (from Kyrgyz – Black Lake) is one of the largest cities in Kyrgyzstan. It is renowned for its captivating history and is one of the most interesting cultural and culinary destinations in the country.

Afterwards, you will visit the village of Svetlaya Polyana. Here, you will have the opportunity to stroll through Kyrgyzstan's most beautiful and untouched nature to see the famous Seven Bulls Rocks (in Kyrgyz – Jeti Oguz) and the Maiden's Braids waterfall. The name of the rocks, an important symbol of Kyrgyz culture, comes from their resemblance to seven bulls and the legend of a Kyrgyz khan and his unfaithful wife. The size, colour, and presence of the rocks will take your breath away.

After a day filled with new experiences and impressions, we return to the hotel for dinner and rest.

Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 160 km/2.5 hours).

Day 4

The Abandoned Ghost Town and Hot Springs (Engilchek)

Today, our adventure takes us on an off-road tour through the Chon Ashu Pass, rising to 3822 m above sea level in the most isolated region of the country – the Saridjaz Ridge. Our ultimate destination is the abandoned ghost town of Engilchek. Due to unemployment following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the town was left behind, and today you can witness the ruins of houses, playgrounds, and an airport. Nevertheless, around 20 families still live in the town, breathing new life into Engilchek. There is even a small school for the children, for whom we will bring gifts along the way. About 50 km east of the town lies the glacier of the same name, which is the largest and fastest-moving in Kyrgyzstan.

After an exhilarating day, we will return to Karakol and enjoy dinner together.

Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 300 km/5 hours).

Day 5

Karakol – Son-Kul Lake, 400 km

Today we have planned an unforgettable and extraordinary trekking tour to the beautiful glacial lake Son-Kul. Moving towards Son-Kul on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul lake, we will visit the local souvenir shop in Kochkor and have lunch with a local family. Further driving to Son-Kul lake through the Kalmak-Ashu pass at 3433m. Dinner and overnight stay in a yurt camp on the shores of Son-Kul lake. Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Transport: walking tour

Day 6

A Day at the Beautiful Song-Kul Lake (Song-Kul)

Today's journey will take us from Karakol to Lake Song-Kul, situated at over 3010m above sea level in the heart of the mighty Tien Shan mountain range (which translates from Chinese as the Heavenly Mountains), covering much of the territory of Kyrgyzstan. Song-Kul is the largest freshwater lake in the country and the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan. Because it is relatively inaccessible, this experience will be something you will remember for a very long time.

We will go horseback riding to the top of the Tuz Pass, where we'll enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Song-Kul and the southern ridge. Another stunning sight from Tuz Pass is the Kilemche pasture and the colourful mountains of the opposite ridge.

After horseback riding, we will have a few hours' drive to the village of Kochkor, where we will settle in a guesthouse.

On the way, we will visit some local souvenir shops in the big village of Kochkor, from where you can buy something as a keepsake.

Food: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 400 km/6 hours).

Day 7

From Kochkor to Bishkek

Today, we will head back to Bishkek, the capital, where we will explore its principal attractions. Bishkek is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan and is famed for its wide boulevards and marble-clad public buildings. Narrow irrigation channels line most streets, providing water for the innumerable trees, which in turn offer welcome shade during the hot summers. Bishkek is an intriguing blend of grand Soviet architecture and traditional local culture, exemplified by the colourful Osh Bazaar, which we shall also visit. There, you can buy food products, almost every kind of household goods, clothes, souvenirs, and even musical instruments. A special highlight is the section for traditional Kyrgyz goods called 'Kyal,' which means 'fantasy, dream.' It offers folk costumes, intricately carved chests and boxes, traditional mats and blankets (teshek), distinctive local cradles (beshik), and various other products typical of Kyrgyz culture.

On your last evening in Kyrgyzstan, we have planned a festive dinner at a restaurant designed in traditional Kyrgyz style. After a day filled with encounters with Kyrgyz traditions, we will relax at the hotel.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Transport: private transfer (approximately 200 km/3 hours).

Day 8

Farewell, Kyrgyzstan!

After midnight, we will take you to the airport, from where you can head home or to your next destination.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is something unclear?

+359 887 293 757

Is Kyrgyzstan a safe place to explore?

Absolutely! Most of the time, we'll be in isolated regions where we'll be completely safe. The cities have low crime rates, the people are friendly, and the hospitality is warm in the country.

What documents do I need for Kyrgyzstan?

For travelling to Kyrgyzstan, Bulgarian citizens need a valid passport and visa. Don't worry, the visa can be easily obtained online through Kyrgyzstan's electronic system. Just ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months after your entry date, and you're all set for adventures in this beautiful country!

What's the currency and how much money should I carry with me?

The currency in Kyrgyzstan is SOM. 1 Bulgarian BGN is equal to 42 Kyrgyz SOM.

Kyrgyzstan is a very affordable country to visit. Almost everything you need is covered in the tour, but it's usually recommended to bring an extra 300 euros for gifts and other expenses.

What kind of weather should I expect?

Summer in Kyrgyzstan is hot, but expect sub-zero temperatures in the mountains, even during the coldest months. Don't forget to pack warm clothes as we ascend to higher grounds, along with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect from the high-altitude sun.

Are there any restrictions on how women should dress?

Broadly speaking, women are allowed to wear whatever they like in most parts of the country. Considering that we'll mostly be in isolated areas, this shouldn't be a major concern.

Should I carry medication in Kyrgyzstan?

Most of the route passes through isolated mountain regions, so it's a good idea to bring a personal first aid kit. Ibuprofen, stomach medications (like Imodium), and anything you usually carry when travelling are useful. If you need specific medications, take them from home.

Can you get mobile service and internet access?

Upon arriving at Bishkek airport, you can purchase an inexpensive SIM card for your stay.

Can I fly a drone in Kyrgyzstan?

Currently, there is no specific legislation for drones, but from 1st September 2025, new requirements will come into effect: mandatory drone registry, operator certificate, and restrictions on zones and altitude. Avoid airports (8 km), heliports (3 km), border areas, and military sites. Daylight hours only. Check the current status before your trip.
