WhyMadeira?

A Paradise on Earth You'll Remember for a Lifetime

Many of us haven't been to Hawaii, but if there's another place in the world that comes close, it's Madeira.
Officially, and repeatedly named the best island destination in the world, this is a slice of Paradise, just within our reach.

We invite you on yet another unique journey - ten days filled with nature walks and breathtaking views. Hikes from the ocean to the skies - from the highest cliffs in Europe to mountain ridges and sunsets above the clouds.

In Madeira, eternal spring reigns, and the colours you'll soak in will make every other destination pale in comparison. Each day there is magical, and each trek will bring new emotions. We'll visit the enchanted forests of Fanal, swim in natural volcanic pools, and see waterfalls cascading directly into the Atlantic Ocean.
We’ll be left speechless, but we'll fill our hearts with emotion and our phones with pictures.

Is this journey meant for you?

Nature

Culture

If you love losing yourself in green and finding yourself in blue - Madeira is your place.

This journey is for you if you dream of hikes that start from the ocean and end above the clouds. If you love dramatic cliffs, misty forests, and waterfalls that plunge into the abyss. If your heart skips a beat at the sight from 600 meters high, yet you can also enjoy a glass of wine in silence, with barefoot toes on the terrace.

Madeira is for those who seek not luxury, but a feeling. For the people who know that the best spots aren't seen from the car park, but reached after a little climb and a lot of 'wow'. If you believe that nature can heal and inspire – it's already waiting for you there.

The Haikus

Hiking from Ocean to Clouds

Madeira is not an island you merely visit – it's a place you climb. We will start near the foam of the waves, ascend steep paths, through breathtaking views, verdant ridges, and deep valleys. We will climb to places where the clouds roll over the slopes, and witness the Atlantic Ocean merging with the horizon. We will greet the sunset high above, with clothes soaked from moisture and wind, but with a feeling that we are at a place where nature both embraces – and challenges – you simultaneously. This is not just a walk. This is a discovery. Of oneself. Of heights. Of a new perspective.

The Enchanted Forests

The Forests of Fanal – Like a Dream, But Real

Sometimes the world seems a bit too real to be beautiful. And sometimes – as it is in Fanal – it’s so beautiful, it doesn’t seem real at all. This is a place where the mist drapes itself between the thick branches of ancient laurel trees, and the grass is a kind of green that only appears after the rain. There’s no noise, unless you count your own breathing or the very quiet 'wow' you whisper at every turn. No throngs of tourists, just sheep and magic. We’ll lose ourselves in a forest that looks like a scene from a movie – but you’ll know you’re truly there, with wet shoes and a full heart.

Accommodation

A Home Full of Stories

This isn't just where we'll sleep – it's our home above the ocean. Throughout the journey, we'll stay together in cosy villas in Cabo Girão Village, perched atop one of Europe's highest sea cliffs - 600 metres above the ocean.

We'll have everything we need: spacious rooms, fully equipped kitchens, a pool, jacuzzi, and a place where conversations continue late into the night. This is where friendships are born, inside jokes are made, and plans for the next adventure take shape. And although we'll tread many paths, the best place often turns out to be exactly this – the shared home at the end of the day.

Itinerary

The weather in Madeira is unpredictable, and there’s always some rain somewhere on the island each day. We are the only travel group that won’t follow a set itinerary; instead, we’ll adapt our program according to the weather. We know the island inside out and will organize the activities and hikes so that we’re in the best conditions for each hike, showcasing the island’s most stunning views.

Day 1

Cabo Girão

We arrive on the island around noon and head straight to our villas, where we'll spend the whole week. We settle in, unwind after the flight, and have lunch overlooking the Atlantic – the perfect way to start this adventure.

In the afternoon, it's time for our first iconic stop – Cabo Girão. This is the highest sea cliff over the ocean in Europe, soaring at 580 metres. Below, you can see vineyards and the ocean, and beneath our feet – a glass platform that guarantees a touch of adrenaline.

We'll have time for a short walk around the area and take our first photos of this dramatic landscape. The evening awaits us with relaxation in the villas – pools, jacuzzis, and a sunset over the ocean that will seal our first day on Madeira.

Day 2

Hawaiian Views

After breakfast, we head to one of the classic Madeira trails – the Nova and Moinho levadas. The path follows the old irrigation channels that once carried water to the villages. Today, they offer an ideal way to experience the true green side of the island – tunnels, steep cliffs, roaring streams, and waterfalls that appear out of nowhere.

Unlike the more famous levadas, we won't encounter crowds here – Nova and Moinho are classics but remain a touch quieter and more serene. This gives us a chance to fully immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and experience the island as it is.

Following the hike, we'll head to the southwestern part of the island. We'll stop at Ponta do Sol, the sunniest spot in Madeira, for a short walk along the coast and to take pictures of the stone bridge. A bit further, Cascata dos Anjos awaits us – a waterfall that falls directly onto the road. Here, we can drive under the water or simply refresh ourselves with a quick shower under the icy water.

If time permits, we'll also reach Garganta Funda – one of the island's tallest waterfalls, plunging 140 metres into a deep gorge. And to finish – a sunset from the cliffs at Miradouro do Fio, where the ocean seems to open up before us.

The levada hike: approximately 8.5–9 km, 3–3.5 hours with breaks, light to moderate difficulty (there is one tunnel – a headlamp is recommended). A classic route, but not too popular, which makes it all the more special.

Day 3

Infinity pools by the edge of the ocean

Today, we embark on one of Madeira's lushest and most picturesque trails – Caldeirão Verde. The path begins at Queimadas and follows a narrow levada carved into the rocks. Along the way, we’ll pass through several tunnels and at SPOTS, we’ll be walking along the edge of sheer cliffs – always with incredible views of the valleys. At the end of the trail, a tall, majestic waterfall awaits, cascading into an emerald lake hidden in the heart of the mountain.

In the afternoon, we’ll trade the verdant depths for height – heading towards Pico do Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak. We'll approach it via the easier route from Achada do Teixeira, allowing us to catch the sunset at the summit without too much exertion. If the weather is kind, we'll witness a sea of clouds painted in gold and pink – one of the island's most impressive sights.

Trekking for the day:

  • Caldeirão Verde: ~13 km in total, 4–5 hours, moderate difficulty (tunnels – headlamp recommended).

  • Pico do Ruivo (from Achada do Teixeira): 6 km in total, about 2 hours both ways, moderate difficulty.

Day 4

At the Top of the Island - from Areiro to Ruivo

Today, we're in for one of the most spectacular oceanfront routes—a combination of Vereda do Larano and the wild stretch at Boca do Risco. We start from Porto da Cruz—a small village nestled between rocks and waves, where time seems to stand still. From here, the trail follows the edge of mountain slopes, perched high above the ocean.

Vereda do Larano leads us through green hills and narrow paths, seemingly slicing the horizon in half—the sky above and the endless Atlantic below. It's one of those trails that takes your breath away, not because of difficulty, but because of the vistas.

Once we reach Boca do Risco, we continue along a more rugged and less traversed path. Here, Madeira reveals its wildest form—cliffs plummet vertically into the ocean, and the trail winds along the slopes like a slender thread.

The finish is at the old cemetery of Machico—a symbolic end to a trail that shows us the island as it truly is: raw, beautiful, and eternal.

The hike: about 11 km, 4–5 hours with breaks, moderate difficulty (narrow and exposed sections, but no serious climbs).

Day 5

Pico Grande

Today, we set off to the northwestern part of the island – one of the wildest and most dramatic SPOTS in Madeira. Our journey takes us through coastal serpentine roads and small villages, as towering cliffs, black sandy beaches, and the mighty waves of the Atlantic gradually unfold before us.

We'll stop in Seixal, to stroll along one of the most beautiful beaches of the island – featuring black volcanic sand with a backdrop of green mountains. Then we continue to Porto Moniz, where the famous natural pools await us – rock formations filled with salty water and splashes from the ocean. Even in cooler weather, it's hard to resist the temptation to plunge in here.

In the afternoon, we head up into the mountains, towards one of the island’s most magical forests – Fanal Forest. This is part of Madeira’s ancient laurel forest, listed by UNESCO. When fog settles among the century-old laurel trees, the landscape looks utterly unreal – as if we've stepped into another era. We will have plenty of time for a walk, photos, and simply enjoying the mystical atmosphere.

Walks for the day: easy and varied, with the opportunity to swim in the ocean pools and wander through the forest (2–3 km). Difficulty – easy.

Day 6

Ponta do Sao Lourenco

Today, we will visit the easternmost point of the island.

We'll have the chance to walk along the sheer cliffs of Sao Lourenco, featured on every souvenir postcard.

There are alternative trails here, resulting in round-trip treks between 7-10km.

Day 7

Funchal and Monte Palace

After the lush green forests and mountain peaks of Madeira, it's time for a completely different landscape – the rugged and almost lunar peninsula of São Lourenço. This is the easternmost point of the island, where the wind and ocean have sculpted sheer cliffs, red and golden hills, and panoramas that seem otherworldly.

The trail follows the ridge of the peninsula, surrounded by the ocean on both sides. In one direction, we see the endless blue, and in the other, dramatic cliffs and islets that guard the shore from the waves. With each turn, new views and colours unfold – from dark brown rocks to emerald waters and skies that change their hues every minute.

The finale takes us to a hill with a small lighthouse, from where we will enjoy a 360-degree view of the entire island. It is one of those SPOTS where you feel like you've reached the end of the world – and it's absolutely stunning.

The trek: about 7–8 km round trip, 3–4 hours, moderate difficulty (some climbs, strong winds are common).

Day 8

Rabakal

After days spent in mountains and along coastlines, it's time to explore the urban side of Madeira. Today, we'll leave the car behind and immerse ourselves in the capital, Funchal – a bustling city with cobblestone streets, markets, cafes, and a sense of eternal spring.

We'll start with a stroll through the centre and along the seaside promenade, then take the cable car up towards the Monte district. The journey itself is an attraction – in just minutes, we rise above the red rooftops of Funchal and land amidst green hills.

The big goal for the day is the Monte Palace Tropical Garden – over 70,000 square meters of tropical flora, art, and history. Amongst exotic plants, we'll discover African statues, Japanese gardens, koi carp ponds, and even a gem exhibition. It's a SPOT that could easily take up the entire day – it's that diverse and beautiful.

For those seeking a bit more adrenaline, there will be the chance to return to the city with the traditional toboggans – woven sledges where two men with hats and rubber-soled shoes whisk us down the steep streets without brakes. Unique to Madeira and quite a fun experience!

The rest of the day is free – we might explore the old town, visit markets with exotic fruits, pop into the cathedral or the Cristiano Ronaldo museum. And in the evening – a final walk along the seaside promenade before heading back to the villas.

Walks for the day: easy city strolls, with no difficulty requirements.

Day 9

Until we meet again, Madeira

Last morning on the island. We wake up to another sunrise over the ocean and drink coffee with views that have already become familiar. It's time to pack our bags, take some final photos by the villas, and, if the weather allows, have a short walk around the area.

In the afternoon, we head to the airport – one of the most spectacular in the world, built on columns over the ocean. With a smile and a touch of nostalgia, we board the plane to Sofia.

Madeira is left behind – with its mountains, waterfalls, ocean sunsets, and the small trails that showed us what it truly means to be the 'island of eternal spring'. But the memories remain – and they will surely bring us back.

Day 10

The Enchanted Fanal Forest

On this day, we'll wander along one of Rabacal's long trails and pass through misty, damp, and chilly jungles to reach the Fanal forest – the renowned mystical woods, where with a bit of luck, the fog will add an enchanting touch to our photos.

This trek is about 10 km, so if we're tired from previous days, we'll head straight to the forest, allowing us more time to explore and capture the astounding natural beauty.

We end this day hoping for a view above the clouds that will unveil the island’s entire eastern part in all its glory, or veil it in a white cloak of clouds.

Day 11

Flight to Bulgaria

We wake up filled with wonderful emotions and beautiful memories, greeting our last sunrise on Madeira for this trip. Today, there will be a little time for free activities and packing, before we head back to Sofia.
