Why Madeira?

A Paradise on Earth You'll Remember for a Lifetime

Many of us have never been to Hawaii, but if there is another place on Earth that comes close, it's Madeira.
Officially and many times hailed as the best island destination in the world, it is a slice of Paradise within arm's reach.

We invite you to yet another unique journey – ten days brimming with nature walks and breathtaking views. Treks from the ocean to the skies – from Europe's highest vertical cliffs to mountain ridges and sunsets above the clouds.

In Madeira, eternal spring reigns, and the colours you'll immerse yourself in there will make every other destination pale in comparison. Every day there is magic, and every trek will bring a new emotion. We'll visit the magical forests of Fanal, swim in natural volcanic pools, and marvel at waterfalls cascading straight into the Atlantic Ocean.
We will be left speechless, but our hearts will be filled with emotion and our phones with photographs.

Is this journey meant for you?

Nature

Culture

If you love losing yourself in green and finding yourself in blue - Madeira is your place.

This journey is for you if you dream of hikes that start by the ocean and end above the clouds. If you’re drawn to dramatic cliffs, misty forests, and waterfalls that plunge into the abyss. If your heart skips a beat at a view from 600 metres high, but you can also enjoy a glass of wine in silence, with bare feet on the terrace.

Madeira is for those who do not seek luxury, but a sensation. For the people who know the best spots aren’t visible from the parking lot, but are found after a bit of a climb and many "wow" moments. If you believe that nature can heal and inspire – it is already waiting for you there.

The Haikus

Hiking from Ocean to Clouds

Madeira isn’t just an island you visit – it’s a place you climb. We’ll start near the froth of the waves, ascending steep trails, passing breathtaking views, green ridges, and deep valleys. We’ll climb to places where clouds roll across slopes and see the Atlantic Ocean merge with the horizon. We’ll greet the sunset from high above, with clothes dampened by mist and wind, yet feeling like we’re in a place where nature both embraces – and challenges – you at once. This isn’t just a walk. It’s a discovery. Of yourself. Of heights. Of a new perspective.

The Forests of Fanal – Like a Dream, But Real

Sometimes the world seems too real to be beautiful. And sometimes—as it is in Fanal—it's so beautiful that it doesn't seem real. This is a place where mist drifts between the thick branches of ancient laurel trees, and the grass is a green that only happens after rainfall. There’s no noise unless you count your own breathing or the quiet 'wow' that you whisper at every turn. There are no tourist crowds, just sheep and magic. We will get lost in a forest that resembles a scene from a film—but you'll know you are really there, with wet shoes and a full heart.

Accommodation

A Home Full of Stories

This is not just where we’ll sleep – this is our home above the ocean. Throughout the journey, we’ll be together in cosy villas at Cabo Girão Village, perched on one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe - 600 meters above the ocean.

We’ll have everything we need: spacious rooms, fully equipped kitchens, a pool, a jacuzzi, and a place where conversations linger long into the evening. It’s where friendships are born, inside jokes are crafted, and plans for the next adventure take shape. And although we’ll tread many paths, often the best place turns out to be just this – the shared home at the end of the day.

Itinerary

The weather in Madeira is unpredictable, and there’s always some rain somewhere on the island each day. We are the only travel group that won’t follow a set itinerary; instead, we’ll adapt our program according to the weather. We know the island inside out and will organize the activities and hikes so that we’re in the best conditions for each hike, showcasing the island’s most stunning views.

Day 1

Welcome to the Island of Eternal Spring

We arrive on the island around noon and head straight to our villas, where we'll spend the entire week. We settle in, unwind after the flight, and have lunch with views of the Atlantic – the perfect way to kick off this adventure.

In the afternoon, it's time for our first iconic stop – Cabo Girão. This is Europe's highest cliff facing the ocean, soaring at 580 meters. Below us are vineyards and the ocean, and beneath our feet – a glass platform that guarantees a touch of adrenaline.

We'll have time for a short walk in the area and take the first photos of this dramatic landscape. In the evening, relaxation awaits in the villas – pools, jacuzzi, and a sunset over the ocean, wrapping up our first day on Madeira.

Day 2

Meadows, waterfalls, and an ocean sunset

After breakfast, we head out to one of the classic Madeiran routes – the Nova and Moinho levadas. The trail follows the old irrigation channels that once carried water to the villages. Today, they offer the perfect way to experience the island's true green side – tunnels, steep cliffs, rushing streams, and waterfalls that appear out of nowhere.

Unlike the more famous levadas, here we won't encounter crowds – Nova and Moinho are classics but remain a bit quieter and more peaceful. This gives us a chance to fully immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and experience the island as it truly is.

After the hike, we will head to the southwest part of the island. We will stop in Ponta do Sol, the sunniest spot in Madeira, for a short walk along the coast and some photos of the stone bridge. A little further on, we will find Cascata dos Anjos – a waterfall that pours directly onto the road. Here, we can drive through the streams or simply enjoy a refreshing quick shower under the icy water.

If time allows, we'll reach Garganta Funda – one of the highest waterfalls on the island, plummeting 140 metres into a deep gorge. And to finish – a sunset from the cliffs at Miradouro do Fio, where the ocean seems to open up before us.

Levada hike: approximately 8.5–9 km, 3–3.5 hours with breaks, light to moderate difficulty (there is a tunnel – a headlamp is recommended). A classic route, but not overly popular, which makes it even more special.

Day 3

Caldeira Verde and Sunset Above the Clouds

Today, we're in for one of Madeira's greenest and most picturesque trails – Caldeirão Verde. The path begins at Queimadas and follows a narrow levada carved into the cliffs. Along the way, we'll pass through several tunnels and at times walk on the edge of sheer cliffs – always with incredible views of the valleys. At the end of the trail, a tall, majestic waterfall awaits, cascading into an emerald lake hidden in the heart of the mountain.

In the afternoon, we'll swap the verdant depths for heights – climbing up to Pico do Ruivo, the highest peak of Madeira. We'll reach it via the easier trail from Achada do Teixeira, allowing us to catch the sunset at the summit without much exertion. If the weather's in our favour, we'll witness a sea of clouds tinged in gold and pink – one of the island's most breathtaking views.

Hikes for the day:

  • Caldeirão Verde: ~13 km total, 4–5 hours, moderate difficulty (tunnels – headlamp recommended).

  • Pico do Ruivo (from Achada do Teixeira): 6 km total, about 2 hours round trip, moderate difficulty.

Day 4

Along the Rocky Edge of Vereda do Larano

Today, we embark on one of the most spectacular coastal routes – a combination of Vereda do Larano and the wild section at Boca do Risco. We start from Porto da Cruz – a quaint village nestled between rocks and waves, where time seems to have stopped. From here, the path winds along the edge of the mountain slopes, high above the ocean.

Vereda do Larano takes us through green hills and narrow paths that seem to slice the horizon in two – the sky above and the endless Atlantic below. It's one of those routes that leaves you breathless not due to its difficulty, but because of the views.

After reaching Boca do Risco, we continue along a rougher, less-trodden section. Here, Madeira reveals itself in its wildest form – cliffs plummet steeply into the ocean, and the path winds along the slopes like a thin thread.

The finish is at the old cemetery of Machico – a symbolic end to a route that shows us the island as it is: raw, beautiful, and timeless.

The Trek: about 11 km, 4–5 hours with breaks, moderate difficulty (narrow and exposed sections, but no significant climbs).

Day 5

The Ocean Pools and the Mystical Fanal Forest

Today, we head to the north-western part of the island – one of the wildest and most dramatic places in Madeira. The road takes us through coastal switchbacks and small villages, as sheer cliffs, black sandy beaches, and the powerful waves of the Atlantic slowly unfold before us.

We will stop at Seixal to stroll along one of the most beautiful beaches on the island – with black volcanic sand and a backdrop of green mountains. Then, we continue to Porto Moniz, where the famous natural pools await us – rock formations filled with salty water and ocean sprays. Even in cooler weather, it's hard to resist the temptation to dive in here.

In the afternoon, we head up into the mountains, to one of the most magical forests on the island – Fanal Forest. This is a part of Madeira's ancient laurel forest, included in the UNESCO list. When the mist settles among the century-old laurel trees, the landscape looks almost unreal – as if we've stepped into another era. We'll have plenty of time to walk, take photos, and simply enjoy the mystical atmosphere.

Walks for the day: easy and varied, with the opportunity to swim in the ocean pools and walk through the forest (2–3 km). Difficulty – easy.

Day 6

The Valley of Waterfalls in Rabacal

Today, we set off to one of the greenest and most enchanting places on the island – the valley of Rabaçal. Here, the levadas flow down steep slopes, and we are surrounded on all sides by dense forest and the sound of running water.

Our route will first take us to Risco Falls – a majestic 100-metre wall of water that cascades directly into the moss-covered valley. Then we continue to the most famous part of the area – 25 Fontes. There, in a hidden green basin, we will discover hundreds of small springs that trickle down the rocks and gather in a crystal-clear lake. The place is like something out of a fairy tale and is among those sights that stay with you for a lifetime.

On the way, we will also pass through one of the longest tunnels on the island – about 800 metres, so our headlamps will come in handy once again.

The hike: approximately 9–10 km, 4–4.5 hours with breaks, moderate difficulty (a few ascents and descents, narrow sections).

Day 7

The End of the Island: Sao Lourenço

Beyond the green forests and mountain peaks of Madeira, it's time for a completely different landscape – the rugged and almost lunar São Lourenço Peninsula. This is the easternmost point of the island, where the wind and ocean have sculpted sheer cliffs, red and golden hills, and panoramas that seem from another world.

The trail follows the ridge of the peninsula, surrounded by the ocean on both sides. In one direction, we see the endless blue, and in the other – dramatic cliffs and islets that shield the coast from the waves. With each turn, new views and colours are revealed – from dark brown rocks to emerald waters and skies that change their hues every minute.

The finale leads us to the hill with a small lighthouse, where we'll have a 360-degree view of the entire island. It's one of those places where you feel you've reached the end of the world – and it's absolutely stunning.

The hike: about 7–8 km both ways, 3–4 hours, moderate difficulty (a few ascents, strong winds are common).

Day 8

Funchal and the Tropical Gardens of Monte

After days in the mountains and along the coastlines, it's time to explore Madeira's urban side. Today we leave the car behind and dive into the capital Funchal – a lively city with cobblestone streets, markets, cafes, and a sense of eternal spring.

We’ll start with a walk around the centre and the promenade, followed by a cable car ride up to the Monte district. The journey is an attraction in itself – in just a few minutes we rise above the red rooftops of Funchal and land amidst green hills.

The main aim for the day is Monte Palace Tropical Garden – over 70,000 sq. m. of tropical flora, art, and history. Amidst exotic plants, we’ll find African statues, Japanese gardens, koi carp ponds, and even an exhibition of precious stones. It’s a place that can easily take up the whole day – it's that diverse and beautiful.

For those seeking a bit more adrenaline, there will be the chance to return to the city on traditional toboggans – woven sleds where two men with hats and rubber-soled shoes take us down the steep streets without brakes. Unique to Madeira and quite a fun experience!

The rest of the day will be free – we can explore the Old Town, visit the market with exotic fruits, enter the cathedral or the Cristiano Ronaldo museum. And in the evening – one last stroll along the promenade before returning to the villas.

Walks for the day: easy urban treks, no difficulty requirements.

Day 9

Until we meet again, Madeira

Last morning on the island. We wake up to yet another sunrise over the ocean and drink coffee with views that have already become familiar to us. It's time to pack our bags, take a few final photos around the villas, and, if the weather allows, go for a short walk in the area.

In the afternoon, we head to the airport – one of the most spectacular in the world, built on pillars above the ocean. With a smile and a touch of nostalgia, we board the plane to Sofia.

Madeira is behind us – with its mountains, waterfalls, ocean sunsets, and the small trails that showed us what it means to be the 'island of eternal spring'. But the memories remain – and they will surely bring us back.

The complex combines cosy villas and apartments with a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a retreat into nature. WHO'S LEADING THE TOUR?

Chef Dalit

Chef Dalit is our trusted partner and one of the best private chefs in the Azores. So talented that she travels with us and cooks at other destinations too. She is one of the strongest elements of the whole experience.

With over 12 years of experience, including working on luxury yachts in the Caribbean and longstanding practice on São Miguel, Dalit combines global culinary techniques with the freshest local produce. Oceanic fish, seafood, and seasonal vegetables from the islands, served with meticulous attention to detail.

Her menus are entirely customised, tailored to tastes, diets, and the pace of the journey. From leisurely breakfasts to long dinners after adventuring outdoors, dining with Dalit is not just a meal, it's an essential part of how the journey feels.

Martin Bonov

Marto is a digital nomad with many passions, a few professions, and almost no free time. Besides photographing for us and developing the website, he is the driving force behind some of our most picturesque adventures - from Madeira and the Azores to Utah and Arizona.

Madeira became his second home back in 2021 when he spent a month and a half exploring the island. Since then, he returns every year to share his knowledge and showcase the most beautiful spots to our clients - at the right moment and in the right SPOT. Marto knows when the clouds will clear, when the mist will lend magic to the mountains, and where to escape the rain to see the island in its best light.

With him, there are no boundaries – every group experiences Madeira in their own unique way. And those who've already followed in his footsteps speak of one of their most unforgettable journeys.

For questions related to payments, contracts, and terms:

What documents do I need for Madeira?

Madeira is part of Portugal. You can travel there with just your ID card.

Is there a risk from wild animals and danger from insects?

There is no dangerous fauna in Madeira. There are hardly even any mosquitoes. The island is green, peaceful, and safe.

Will I manage the hikes?

Most hikes are about 5-10km in length with easy to moderate difficulty and pose no challenge for those used to walking. If you need a break, you can skip any of the programmed days and enjoy the hotel's spa, or partake in one of the additional activities.

What's the currency and how much money should I carry with me?

Madeira operates with euros. Most things can be paid with a card - it's not necessary to have cash. We advise you to prepare at least 200 euros.

How will we get around the island?

We will be travelling in rented minibuses. Most journeys are within an hour's drive each way. Alternatively, if you need a ride, you can use public transport, a taxi, or the Bolt app, which works like Uber – offering convenient online ordering and payment.

What's the weather like in Madeira?

"The Island of Eternal Spring." Temperatures year-round range from 16-25°C. Summer (June-September): 22-25°C, dry. Winter (December-March): 16-19°C, with more rainfall. The northern side is wetter and greener, the southern is drier and sunnier. At higher altitudes (like the levadas and mountain trails), it is 5-10°C cooler. Ocean water ranges from 18-23°C.

When can I sign up for the additional activities?

Signing up for these activities will be done during the journey. Payment for some of them might require cash in hand.

Is there roaming and internet?

Just like anywhere else in the EU, you can use your mobile plan here too. Most of the time you'll have coverage, except for some of the trails.

Can I take my drone?

Of course, we'll be bringing ours too :) In Madeira, European laws and rules for drone flights apply, and the views are even more stunning from above.

How's city life in Madeira?

Funchal is the biggest city on the island, and you can find everything you need here. It boasts fantastic bars, restaurants, shops, and parks.

We'll be staying 15-20 minutes from the centre of Funchal. Besides our transport, there are transfers, taxis, and the Uber/Bolt app, making it easy to organize your transport.

Ready for an adventure?

Signed up for the expedition but wondering what to pack? You can check off your gear here and ensure you're fully prepared.

Get ready with spring clothes, as the weather in Madeira might surprise us. Every day we'll head out in a T-shirt, but have an outer layer and raincoat at hand.
