Why Madagascar?

An Unconventional Africa

Following the division of continents in prehistoric times, Madagascar remained separated from Africa and India. This allowed local animals and plants to evolve in relative isolation, creating numerous species that are found nowhere else in the world. As a result, today over 90% of the flora and fauna in the island nation is endemic. It's precisely this unique natural wealth and diversity that we will encounter in its natural habitat, which is even more isolated — on a few small islands off the northwestern coast of Madagascar.

Due to its remoteness, Madagascar was not populated with humans until about 2000 years ago. The people now living on the island descended from Indonesians who arrived across the Indian Ocean. There are also Arabs and Africans who settled later. This diverse mix of people greatly contributes to the island's unique cultural practices.

About the Journey

The Island of Lemurs

The total duration of this journey is 9 days, 7 of which will be spent on the island of Nosy Be. It is located near the northwestern coast of Madagascar's main island and is the largest resort in the country. In Malagasy, its name means The Big Island, but over the centuries it has been known by various names, including The Scented Island.

However, we will also visit two more small neighbouring islands to encounter a wide array of local wildlife, among which the most famous are perhaps the untouchable lemurs, and more specifically – their black variety. Exciting 'meetings' await us in the waters of the Indian Ocean as well – we will have the chance to observe the giant (and completely harmless) whale sharks up close and even swim with them; we will also see other impressive marine creatures. Back on land, we will have the opportunity to marvel at the craftsmanship of local artisans and, of course, to acquire some of their most exquisite creations.

Day 1

Welcome to Madagascar!

Upon arriving and settling into the picturesque Loharano Lodge, located on the island of Nosy Be, you can enjoy freshly prepared seafood for lunch, served with traditional island sauces and spices. The delicious dishes and exotic aromas will transport you to another world of delight. In the afternoon, you can choose one of the adventures the island offers. Wander through the lush forests, discovering an array of wild flora and fauna. Watch closely to spot the rare lemurs hidden among the treetops.

Day 2

Today, we embark on a journey to the island of Nosy-Be

Etymologically, Nosy-Be means big island, which is also the largest island in Madagascar with exceptional biodiversity, an ideal climate boasting 340 sunny days a year. We'll tour the island by car, allowing you to get immersed in its culture, discover the ethnic group 'Sakalava', and touch upon its sacred sites like the 'Sacred Tree and its 12 lakes'. What to see? What to do? • Visit the Mahatsinjo “Sacred Tree” cultural site, a prayer spot for the animist culture • Stroll through the town centre with its large market of spices and tropical fruits – free time for shopping – Traces of colonization • Visit the oldest and historic village of Marodoka, the first and largest ancient city • Relax in Andilana or Ambatoloaka on several kilometres of white sandy beaches – swimming and sunbathing or enjoy a small massage in the shade of coconut trees • Mont Passot, the highest point, offers a 360° panoramic view to take in the sunset marking the end of the tour Departure: 07:30 AM

Day 3

Free Day

Today, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the underwater world of Madagascar with a mask and snorkel. Explore the beauty of the coral reefs, encountering incredible fish and sea creatures. Water, colours, and silence – a true harmony with nature. End this day with a magical sunset, watching the sky transform into a palette of oranges, pinks, and purples, with a glass of prosecco in hand.

Day 4

Whale Shark Watching

Although it is the largest fish on Earth, measuring up to 12 meters and weighing several tons, the whale shark is completely harmless. It filters plankton and small fish, coming to feed in the waters of Nosy Be between October and December.

Therefore, you can swim safely alongside whale sharks under the guidance of divers and experienced marine biologists. The expedition to observe these graceful giants is also an excellent opportunity to encounter various other marine fauna, including dolphins—a sight not to be missed.

Departure: 7:30 am

Transport: Motorboat

Day 6

Nosy Komba: The Island of Lemurs / Nosy Tanikely The Little Island

Nosy Komba is home to the lemurs. The island still retains its lush vegetation and its distinctive fauna, such as boa constrictors, chameleons, and various land tortoises, its breathtaking views, fishing villages, as well as its traditional crafts like woodcarving and embroidery.

The island's lemurs are subject to fady (a cultural taboo), which makes them 'sacred', meaning it is forbidden to hunt them or disturb them in any way. The black lemurs (Eulemur macaco) live in groups of about twenty individuals. They feed almost entirely on fruit. The males have black fur, whereas the females, who carry their young attached to their bellies, are reddish-brown with lighter hair around the head.

Nosy Tanikely is another of the small islands located northwest of Madagascar's main island. It is south of Nosy Be and east of Nosy Komba. Most of its territory is taken up by a national park.

What will you see and do?

Visit a fishing village

Visit craft markets with woodcarvings and embroidery, free time for shopping;

Visit animal parks.

Day 7

Lokobe Forest Reserve

Lokobe is a forest reserve on the island of Nosy Be, which is protected and preserved, offering visitors the chance to spend a day immersed in lush nature. Even the journey there will be exciting!

As soon as we arrive at the village of Ambatozavavy, a 45-minute canoe trip across the bay awaits us. During this time, you will witness lush landscapes, including mangrove forests and palm-like traveller's trees (Ravenala madagascariensis), named so because the water in their leaves can quench a traveller's thirst. At low tide, you can also enjoy a walk along the ocean floor with our guide and the boatman.

After arriving at the village of Ampasipohy at the entrance to the nature park, a 15-minute break will be given, allowing you to calmly prepare for the upcoming tour. The interior of the forest is rich in diverse flora and fauna, which the specialised guides will be delighted to show you. You'll learn more about the qualities of local medicinal plants and meet various animals endemic to Madagascar.
