WhyMadagascarWhere to next?
An Unconventional Africa
After the continents split in prehistoric times, Madagascar remained isolated from Africa and India. This allowed local animals and plants to evolve in relative isolation, creating numerous species that are found nowhere else on Earth. As a result, today over 90% of the flora and fauna in the island nation is endemic. It's with this unparalleled natural wealth and diversity that we will meet in its natural habitat, even more isolated—on several small islands off the northwest coast of Madagascar.
Due to its remoteness, Madagascar wasn't inhabited by humans until about 2000 years ago. The people now living on the island are descended from Indonesians who came across the Indian Ocean. There are also Arabs and Africans who settled later. This diversity of peoples greatly contributes to the island's unique cultural practices.

About the Journey
The Island of Lemurs
The entire journey spans 9 days, with 7 nights spent on the island of Nosy Be. Located near the northwestern coast of Madagascar's main island, it is the largest resort in the country. In Malagasy, its name means the Great Island, but over the centuries, it has been called by various names, including the Perfumed Island.
However, we will also visit two smaller neighbouring islands, to encounter a diverse array of local fauna, most famously the elusive lemurs, particularly their black variant. Thrilling 'encounters' await us in the waters of the Indian Ocean—where we'll have the chance to observe the gigantic (and perfectly safe) whale sharks up close and even swim alongside them, as well as encounter other impressive marine creatures. Back on land, there will be opportunities to admire the craftsmanship of local artisans and, of course, acquire some of their most exquisite creations.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Madagascar!
Upon arrival and settling into the picturesque Loharano Lodge, located on the island of Nosy Be, you can savour freshly prepared seafood for lunch, served with traditional island sauces and spices. The delightful dishes and exotic aromas will transport you to another world of enjoyment. In the afternoon, you can choose one of the adventures the island has in store for you. Wander through verdant forests, discovering the diversity of wild flora and fauna. Watch closely to spot the rare lemurs hidden among the treetops.
Day 2
Today, we embark on a journey to the island of Nosy-Be
Etimologically, Nosy-Be means big island, and it is the largest island in Madagascar with exceptional biodiversity, ideal climate with 340 sunny days a year. We will tour the island by car, so you can immerse yourself in its culture, the ethnic group 'Sakalava' and discover its sacred places, like 'the sacred tree and its 12 lakes'. What to see? What to do? • Visit the cultural site Mahatsinjo 'Sacred Tree', a place of prayer for animistic culture • Stroll through the city centre with its large market for spices, tropical fruits – free time for shopping – Traces of colonisation • Visit the oldest and historic village of Marodoka, the first and biggest ancient town • Relax in Andilana or Ambatoloaka with several kilometres of white sandy beach – swimming and sunbathing or a gentle massage in the shade of coconut trees • Mount Passot, the highest point, offering a 360° panoramic view, to appreciate the sunset that marks the end of the tour Departure: 07:30
Day 3
Free Day
Today, you can dive into the underwater world of Madagascar with a mask and snorkel. Discover the beauty of the coral reefs, encountering incredible fish and marine creatures. Water, colours, and silence – a true harmony with nature. End this day with a magical sunset, watching as the sky turns into a palette of orange, pink, and purple hues with a glass of prosecco in hand.
Day 4
Whale Shark Watching
Although it is the largest fish on Earth, reaching up to 12 m in length and weighing several tonnes, the whale shark is completely harmless. It filters plankton and small fish, coming to feed in the waters of Nosy Be between October and December.
Therefore, you will be able to swim in complete safety alongside whale sharks under the guidance of divers and experienced marine biologists. The expedition to observe these graceful giants is also a fantastic opportunity to meet various other marine fauna, including dolphins – a sight not to be missed.
Departure: 7:30 am

Day 6
Nosy Komba: The Island of Lemurs / Nosy Tanikely The Little Island
Nosy Komba is the home of lemurs. The island has preserved its lush vegetation and distinctive animal species, such as boas, chameleons, and various land turtles, along with its breathtaking views, fishing villages, and traditional crafts like wood carving and embroidery.
The lemurs on the island are subject to a fady (a traditional cultural taboo), making them 'sacred,' meaning they are prohibited from being hunted or disturbed in any way. Black lemurs (Eulemur macaco) live in groups of around twenty individuals. They feed almost entirely on fruit. The males have black fur, while the females, who carry their young attached to their bellies, are reddish-brown in colour with lighter hair around their heads.
Nosy Tanikely is another of the small islands located to the northwest of Madagascar's main island. It lies south of Nosy Be and east of Nosy Komba. Most of its area is occupied by a national park.
What will you see and do?
Visit a fishing village
Explore artisan markets with wood carvings and embroideries, with free time for shopping;
Visit wildlife parks.
Day 7
Lokobe Forest Reserve
Lokobe is a forest reserve on the island of Nosy Be, a protected and preserved area offering visitors the chance to spend a day immersed in lush nature. Even the journey there will be thrilling!
As soon as we arrive in the village of Ambatozavavy, a 45-minute pirogue ride across the bay awaits, during which you'll be greeted by lush landscapes, including mangrove forests and the palm-like traveller's trees (Ravenala madagascariensis), so named because the water stored in their leaves can quench a traveller’s thirst. At low tide, you can also enjoy a walk on the ocean floor in the company of our guide and the boatman.
Upon arrival at the village of Ampasipohy at the entrance of the nature park, a 15-minute break is given to allow you to calmly prepare for the upcoming tour. The interior of the forest is rich in diverse flora and fauna, which expert guides are eager to show you. You’ll learn more about the properties of local medicinal plants and encounter various animals endemic to Madagascar.
