What is Jeti-Ügüz?

Jeti-Ügüz means "Seven Bulls" in Kyrgyz. Massive red rock formations rise above the valley, aligned as if in a column, like the backs of ancient creatures. Their form is so distinctive that from afar they truly resemble a herd of mighty bulls, frozen in stone.

The local people keep a legend about these rocks — a tale of love, betrayal and a broken heart that caused the seven bulls to petrify in their last breath of rage and pain.

The Legend of the Seven Bulls

Centuries ago, two khans fought for the love of a beautiful woman. When jealousy prevailed and one khan killed his beloved, blood flowed from her heart, staining the entire valley red. From this tragedy were born the seven red rocks, a symbol of eternal pain and remorse.

Today, standing in front of Jeti-Ügüz, you can almost feel the echo of this old story, carried by the wind between the red walls.

How to Get to Jeti-Ügüz?

• It's located about 30 km southwest of the town of Karakol, in Eastern Kyrgyzstan.

• It's easily accessible by car or you can arrange a transfer from Karakol. The road is scenic, passing by green pastures and mountain rivers.

• The place is ideal for a short hike or a picnic in nature.

What to Do in the Area?

• Walk to the "Broken Heart" – another famous rock in the area that resembles a huge broken heart.

• Trekking through the Valleys – there are numerous easy and moderate trails through spruce forests and alpine meadows.

• Visit Traditional Kyrgyz Yurts – an opportunity to taste local cuisine and experience the spirit of nomadic life.

Best Time to Visit

The most beautiful season is from June to September, when the valley is green, the sky is endlessly blue, and the red rocks blaze even more brightly against the soft sunlight. In the spring, Jeti-Ügüz is submerged in a carpet of wildflowers, and autumn paints the forest in golden and copper tones.
