Jeti-Oguz The Red Rocks and the Legend of the Seven Bulls

Jeti-Oguz, Kyrgyzstan's Red Rocks, whisper ancient tales of love and betrayal. Nestled near Karakol, they offer scenic trails and rare natural views.

Somewhere along the slopes of the Tian Shan mountains, where the air smells of pine and freedom flows like a river, you will find a place that seems to be created in an artist's dream. Jeti-Oguz – The Red Rocks of Kyrgyzstan, tell a story as old as the wind and the earth.

And when you stand before them, with eyes fixed on their fiery forms, you realise — here, every rock has its own legend. Here, every sunset is a little eternity.

What is Jeti-Oguz?

Jeti-Oguz means "Seven Bulls" in Kyrgyz. Massive red rock formations rise above the valley, lined up as if the backs of ancient beasts. Their shape is so distinctive that from afar they indeed resemble a herd of mighty bulls, frozen in stone.

The locals preserve a legend about these rocks — a tale of love, betrayal, and a broken heart that caused the seven bulls to petrify in their final breath of rage and pain.

The Legend of the Seven Bulls

Centuries ago, two khans vied for the love of a beautiful woman. When jealousy prevailed and one khan killed his beloved, her heart's blood flowed, colouring the entire valley red. From this tragedy, the seven red rocks were born, a symbol of eternal pain and remorse.

Today, standing before Jeti-Oguz, you can almost feel the echo of this ancient story, carried by the wind between the red walls.

How to Reach Jeti-Oguz?

  • It is located about 30 km southwest of the town of Karakol, in Eastern Kyrgyzstan.
