Angel Falls: the world's tallest waterfall – how to see it up close

Angel Falls in Venezuela is the tallest waterfall in the world, hidden deep within the heart of the Amazon jungle. The journey there is a true adventure, uncovering the majesty of untouched nature.

There are places that seem like legends. Angel Falls in Venezuela is one of them — a waterfall plunging into seemingly endless free fall from almost a kilometre high, as if the sky opens up and begins to cascade down the rocks.

Standing at 979 metres, Angel Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world — a wild, nearly inaccessible marvel hidden in the heart of the Amazon jungle.

What makes Angel Falls so magical?

This is not just a waterfall. It is a symbol of untouched nature, of the majesty of the world as it was before us. When the water breaks away from the edge of the Auyán-tepui plateau and falls freely nearly 1 km down, it transforms into mist, a rainbow, a song of the wind and water.

The sight is so surreal that it seems more like a dream than reality.

How to get to Angel Falls?

  • Fly to Canaima – the easiest way to start the adventure is to fly to the small settlement of Canaima in Canaima National Park.

  • Boat journey – from Canaima, board a traditional canoe (curiara) and embark on a journey up the rivers, through dense jungle. The journey takes several hours and is an adventure in itself.

  • Foot trek – after the boat ride, a short but magical trek through the forest awaits, leading you to the base of the waterfall.

When is the best time to see Angel Falls?

The best time to visit is during the rainy season (June – November) when the waterfall is in full flow. In the dry months (December – March), the water flow reduces significantly and might even dry up.

What to expect from the experience?

  • A real adventure – the journey is raw but magical. You'll row rivers, traverse dense jungle, and sleep in open-air hammocks.

  • Solitude – there are no crowds here. Just you, nature, and the feeling of being at the end of the world.

  • Incredible views – morning mist around the waterfall, evening sunsets over the tepuis, bright stars at night.

How to prepare for the trip?

  • Bring quick-dry clothes – you will get wet.

  • Comfortable hiking boots – for trekking through the jungle.

  • Raincoat – moisture is everywhere.

  • Insect repellent – the jungle teems with life, including insects.

  • An open heart – Angel Falls is no luxury adventure. It's a genuine, raw, breathtaking experience.

Angel Falls – a rendezvous with nature’s perfection

This is not a place to visit for ticking off a destination list. It is a place you choose when you want to feel the grandeur of nature in all its raw beauty. Standing at the base of Angel Falls, watching the sky literally shatter into a waterfall, is a moment that stays with you forever.
