Dallol and Danakil: The Earth's Most Extreme Place
The Danakil Depression and Dallol in Ethiopia offer otherworldly landscapes with boiling thermal springs and salt fields. It's a place of extreme conditions and raw beauty, challenging both spirit and body.

Some places on Earth are unlike anything familiar. Dallol and the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia are spots where nature has painted with its boldest colours, crafted its harshest forms, creating a realm that appears otherworldly.
Nothing is ordinary here. The ground bubbles. Salt forms crystalline landscapes. The air is heavy and hot. And you are but a small speck in this boiling world of life and death.
What are Dallol and Danakil?
Dallol is one of the lowest and hottest places on the planet. Thermal springs, mineral pools, and sulphur create incredible colours—vivid yellow, toxic green, brilliant white.
The Danakil Depression is a vast desert below sea level, where temperatures often exceed 45°C. Salt flats, active volcanoes, and volcanic lakes form a landscape where you can literally feel the Earth breathing beneath your feet.
Why are Dallol and Danakil so extreme?
The lowest point in Africa—about 125 metres below sea level.
Highest average annual temperatures—around 35–40°C year-round.
Extreme geological activity—earthquakes, gas springs, miniature volcanoes.
Absolute lack of shade—there's nowhere to hide from the sun here.
And yet... there's an inexplicable beauty in this harshness. It's as if you're in another dimension, a world crafted only for the boldest eyes.
What will you experience there?
Colourful salt pools—acidic lakes with dazzling hues.
Afar salt caravans—camels loaded with blocks of salt, continuing an ancient mining tradition.
Journey to the active Erta Ale volcano—one of the few permanent lava lakes in the world (optional according to the programme).
A true test of spirit and body—and an invaluable feeling of transcending your own limits.
How to prepare for the adventure?
Essential gear—a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, long lightweight clothing, glasses, and a scarf against the dust.
Plenty of water—hydration is a matter of survival here.
Mindset adjustment—it won't be easy. But it's the difficulty that makes the experience so real.
Experienced guide—a must. Without a seasoned local guide, orientation and safety are nearly impossible.
