How to Plan the Perfect Road Trip Across Costa Rica
Discover the magic of Costa Rica with an unforgettable road trip. Choose the right time, the perfect car, and leave room for spontaneity. Every mile is an adventure that will leave you breathless.

Costa Rica is one of those countries that simply urges you to grab a car and set off without a firm plan. Roads wind through volcanoes, tropical forests, mountains, and wild beaches. And around every bend lies something unexpected—a waterfall, a sloth, a colourful market, or a breathtaking view.
If you want to truly experience the country, a road trip is the best choice. Here’s how to ensure every mile is an adventure.
Step 1: Choose the Right Time to Travel
The best period for a road trip in Costa Rica is the dry season (December–April). Roads are in better condition, rivers haven’t overflowed, and the chances of sunny days are much higher.
If you decide to travel during the green season (May–November), be prepared for rainy afternoons and slightly more adventurous conditions on dirt roads.
Step 2: Choose the Right Vehicle
Don’t hesitate — go for a 4x4. Costa Rica is a country of surprises — sudden rains, unexpected dirt roads, steep climbs.
4x4 SUV – ideal for all routes, especially if you want to reach more secluded beaches and mountain villages.
Standard Car – possible for main routes, but not recommended for a true adventure.
Step 3: Plan, but Leave Room for Spontaneity
Plan the major points of your route, but leave plenty of room for random stops:
Arenal – volcano, hot springs, waterfalls.
Monteverde – cloud forests and zipline adventures.
The Beaches of Guanacaste – Samara, Tamarindo, Conchal.
Manuel Antonio – national park with idyllic beaches and wildlife.
Puerto Viejo – Caribbean rhythm, chocolate plantations, and endless tranquillity.
And remember: some of the most beautiful moments will happen off the pre-drawn maps.
Step 4: Be Prepared for Costa Rican Roads
GPS and Offline Maps – internet is not guaranteed everywhere.
Backup Plan – sometimes a bridge is washed out, or a river has become too wild.
Drive Calmly – here people drive calmly, animals often cross the roads, and the bends are part of the charm.
Step 5: Take Your Time
A road trip in Costa Rica is not about ticking points off a list. It's about stopping for coffee in a mountain village. Turning the car around because you spotted a monkey in the trees. Staying a day longer on a beach where time stands still.
Leave room for surprises. Leave room for life.
Practical Tips for a Perfect Road Trip
Book your accommodations at least for the first few days – then you’ll feel where you want to stay longer.
Carry some cash – cards aren’t accepted everywhere.
Be ready for temperature swings – it's cool in the mountains, hot on the beaches.
Always have water, snacks, and sun protection in the car.
