Why Sumatra?

Ancient tribes, living jungles, and volcanoes within arm's reach.

Sumatra is one of the last truly wild places on the planet – raw, green, and full of surprises. This is a journey through the heart of Indonesia, where endangered species like the orangutan still roam freely through the jungle, volcanoes smoke on the horizon, and ancient tribes like the Mentawai keep their rituals alive.

We'll climb to craters, bathe in waterfalls, trek through dense tropical forest, and sleep in a traditional house of a tribe secluded from the world. We'll dive into local cultures and feel the pulse of this island – both vast and intimate.

This is not just a journey – it's an immersion into another world.

Is this journey meant for you?

Culture

Sumatra is a SPOT that changes you—without asking.

If you yearn for a world where time flows differently. If you want to get lost in the jungle and find yourself by a fire with a tribe that has never heard of Wi-Fi. If you believe nature can be both a temple and a teacher – then this journey is for you.

This is not a holiday, it's an adventure. You'll cross tropical forests, climb volcanoes, watch orangutans in the wild, and sleep in the home of a Mentawai shaman. It's suitable for people with an open mind, a curious spirit, and a desire to breathe life in its rawest and most authentic form.

Face of the Jungle

Among Orangutans and Hidden Waterfalls in the Jungle

The heart of Sumatra beats in the jungle. Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the last places on the planet where you can encounter orangutans in their natural habitat. Not behind bars – but free, observant, and hiding among the branches.

The trek winds through lush tropical forest, where every step unveils a new world – from thousands of plants to rare animals. You will bathe under a hidden waterfall, hear the jungle, which is unmistakable – it whispers, screams, breathes. And it changes you.

Climb to the volcano and dip in hot springs

At dawn, we will set off on the path to Mount Sibayak - active and smoking, seemingly carving a rift between worlds. The climb to the crater takes about 3 hours, and the views along the way are not merely beautiful – they invite you to disconnect from everything.

At the summit, you'll feel the earth breathing, clouds tumbling below you, and life looking different from above. The descent through the jungle ends in natural hot springs – the perfect ending to a day you'll remember.

Among Shamans and Legends

Meeting the Mentawai Tribe – Life Beyond Time

Two days among one of the most ancient tribes in Indonesia – the Mentawai. We'll travel by boat along wild rivers, carry our luggage through the jungle, and sleep in a traditional shaman's house. This isn't a tourist show – it's life as it was before everything else.

We'll fish, prepare sago powder, learn how to make poisons for arrows, and dance around the fire. You'll discover that a true connection with nature and people requires nothing more than being present.

Day 1

Arrival in Jakarta

This afternoon, we land in Jakarta – the energetic capital of Indonesia. We'll settle into a cosy hotel near the airport to rest and gather strength for the upcoming adventure. Tomorrow, we dive straight into the heart of Sumatra.

Overnight stay at FM7 Resort Hotel ****

Day 2

Flight to Medan and ferry to Samosir Island

After breakfast, we fly to the northern part of Sumatra – Medan. From there, a long but scenic transfer begins to Lake Toba – one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world.

We will travel through villages, plantations, and green hills until we reach Parapat, where we board a ferry to Samosir Island – a place with unique culture, located in the heart of the lake.

We settle into Villa Tabo – a charming hotel with views of the water and a taste of tropical tranquillity.

Day 3

Samosir Island – Culture, Rituals, and Royal Legends

We begin the day with a journey across Samosir, home to the Batak people – one of the most fascinating cultures in Indonesia. We visit the villages of Tomok and Ambarita, where we delve into local history, see the ancient tomb of the Sidabutar kings, and sit by the stone throne of Sialagan – a place once used for trials and executions.

We'll also witness a traditional Batak dance, full of lively rhythms and colourful costumes – a ritual still carrying the spirit of the ancestors.

In the evening, we return to Villa Tabo, enriched with the first impressions of an unfamiliar culture.

Day 4

From Lake Toba to the Mountains of Berastagi

We leave Samosir Island and head towards the cool heights of Berastagi – a mountain resort nestled between two active volcanoes.

On our way, we stop at Pematang Purba to explore the royal palace Simalungun – a relic from ancient times and one of the few preserved wooden structures from that era.

We continue to the Sipiso-piso Waterfall – an impressive stream of water plunging 120 metres straight into Lake Toba. It's one of the tallest waterfalls in Indonesia and will undoubtedly leave us speechless.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Berastagi, where we'll wander through the fruit market and visit the traditional village of Dokan – another vibrant corner of Batak culture.

Overnight stay at Hotel Sibayak, with mountain air and a glimpse of tomorrow's climb.

Day 5

Climbing Mount Sibayak and Jungle Hot Springs

Early in the morning, we pack our backpacks – it's time for one of the most thrilling experiences in the programme: climbing to the crater of Mount Sibayak (2172 m).

The hike starts from the village of Semangat Gunung and takes about three hours through mountain landscapes and misty forests. At the summit, surreal views, hissing sulfur vents, and the feeling of setting foot on another planet await us.

The descent takes us through dense green jungle and ends at natural hot springs, where we will rest and have lunch – a well-deserved reward for our efforts.

In the afternoon, we continue towards the northern jungles and arrive at Bukit Lawang – a village on the banks of the Bohorok River, at the foot of Gunung Leuser National Park. We settle into a cosy eco lodge and prepare for our jungle encounter tomorrow.

Overnight at Bukit Lawang Eco Lodge.

Day 6

The Jungle of Gunung Leuser and an Encounter with Orangutans

Today, we delve deep into the heart of the wild. Gunung Leuser National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and spans over 1 million hectares of tropical rainforest – home to some of the most endangered species on the planet.

Our trek will lead us to the old orangutan feeding area, where these incredible creatures still return. We'll see them in their natural habitat – silent, observant, sometimes surprisingly close.

We'll pass through lush greenery, stop by a hidden waterfall where we can refresh ourselves with a swim in crystal-clear waters, and climb to a panoramic view of the Bohorok River valley, overgrown with wild orchids.

This isn't just a walk in nature – it's an encounter with a vanishing world.
In the evening, we return to the eco-lodge, filled with silence, memories, and the scent of the jungle.

Overnight stay at Bukit Lawang Eco Lodge.

Day 7

Flight to West Sumatra and the last breath of civilisation

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the jungle and head towards Medan. From there, we fly southwest - to the coastal city of Padang, where our journey to the Mentawai archipelago will continue.

Today is a day for transfers, rest, and preparation for the next phase – meeting one of the last tribes living in harmony with nature according to their ancient beliefs.

Accommodation at Pangeran Beach Hotel****, right by the shore of the Indian Ocean. The waves will lull us to sleep before we embark by boat tomorrow to a world where time does not exist.

Day 8

Journey to the Mentawai Tribe – A World Beyond Time

Early in the morning, we leave civilization behind. We head towards Siberut Island to meet the Mentawai tribe – one of the most ancient and isolated tribes in Indonesia.

The journey begins with a transfer to Muara Port and continues by boat on the choppy waters of the Indian Ocean. We arrive on the island, where a team of local guides and porters awaits us. We leave our suitcases behind – taking only the essentials.

Next comes another journey by small wooden motorboat (about 2 hours) through dense mangrove forests and muddy channels. The final leg is on foot – trekking through the jungle, over slender wooden logs and between sago palms, until we reach the traditional "Uma" house where we will spend the night.

Here, there is no electricity, no doors, no noise. Just us, the jungle, and people who live in harmony with the earth.
Dinner and overnight stay in a Mentawai house.

Day 9

Life with the Tribe – Hunting, Rituals, and Ancient Wisdom

We wake up to the sounds of the jungle – and the reality that we are guests in a world that almost no one reaches. The day unfolds side by side with the Mentawai – we will fish, prepare sago powder (their staple food), learn how to craft loincloths from bark, make poison for arrows, and maintain balance on muddy wooden bridges.

They will tell us about Arat Sabulungan – their ancient spiritual system, where every plant and ancestor has a soul. We will see the shaman's body art, hear a language without writing, and be part of an evening ceremony with dances and rhythms you can't forget.

This is not a museum. This is life as it was. And still is – somewhere out there in the heart of the jungle.

Overnight in a Mentawai house.

Day 10

Back to the Ocean – Farewell to the Tribe and an Evening in Padang

After a final breakfast at the Mentawai house, we say our goodbyes to our hosts – a farewell that leaves its mark. We pack our bags, tread once more along the wooden logs and take a boat back to Muara Siberut.

A new journey through the island's reality awaits us – motorboat, Angkot, ferry… and gradually civilization reappears. We arrive in Padang in the evening and head to a restaurant for dinner of our own choosing – a taste of Indonesia from the other side of the cultural spectrum.

Then we check into the comfortable Pangeran Beach Hotel** – with white sheets, hot water, and a breeze from the ocean. A reality that seems almost unreal after the jungle.

Day 11

To the Island Paradise – Journey to Rimba Eco Lodge

In the morning, we head south - to the port of Bungus, where a boat awaits us. The destination is one - Rimba Eco Lodge, nestled on a secluded beach on one of the islands off Sumatra.

The journey is short but thrilling - we pass by tropical shores and palm shades until we arrive at a small bay, where our escape from the world awaits.

We settle into eco bungalows, surrounded by jungle and a sea horizon. Dinner is included, and after that, all that's left is to listen to the waves and let the body unwind.

Day 12

Escape to Rimba – jungle, sea, and serenity

After all the treks, boats, volcanoes, and jungles – today we give ourselves time. A completely free day, where there is no schedule, only possibilities.

You can grab a snorkel and explore the underwater world of the Indian Ocean. Paddle a canoe through crystal-clear waters. Take a stroll to the nearby village or simply relax in a hammock with a book and a coconut.

Rimba is a place where everything slows down. The jungle whispers, the waves mark time, and your body remembers what it's like to be here and now.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
Overnight stay at Rimba Eco Lodge.

Day 13

Back to Jakarta – the last evening in Indonesia

After breakfast, we leave the island by boat and return to Bungus, from where we set off to Padang Airport. Flight to Jakarta and transfer to the familiar hotel.

The evening is free - a last chance for dinner in the city, for souvenirs, or simply to sleep with the feeling that you have experienced something real.

Overnight at FM7 Resort Hotel** - with spa, restaurant, and tranquility before the journey home.

Day 14

Kota Tua – A Memory of Batavia and a Flight Home

In the morning, we leave our luggage at the hotel and set off on a short tour around Kota Tua—the old town of Jakarta, also known as Old Batavia. Narrow streets, Dutch colonial architecture, retro cafes, and the feeling that time has paused for a moment.

We'll stroll through the square, feel the spirit of the city before the skyscrapers, and complete the circle—from jungle tribes to the history of the metropolis.

In the afternoon, transfer to the airport and flight back home. The body returns, but the mind stays a little longer—in green, in wild, in Sumatra.
