The Lake Above the Ocean – The Wonder of Sørvágsvatn

Sørvágsvatn on the Faroe Islands is a natural wonder, creating the illusion of a lake suspended above the ocean. Discover how to reach this magical place and find out the best time to visit.

Rocky shores and a lake on the Faroe Islands during winter, at sunset.

Sometimes nature creates illusions so perfect they take your breath away. Sørvágsvatn – the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, is one of those places where the world feels like a dream. From the right angle, its waters seem to hover above the endless Atlantic Ocean, challenging everything you know about perspective and gravity.

And standing there, on the cliff edge, between sky, earth, and sea, you understand – wonders do exist. And sometimes they're more real than anything else.

What are you actually seeing?

The secret of Sørvágsvatn lies in an optical illusion created by steep cliffs, high shores, and the low positioning of the ocean behind them. From certain viewpoints, the lake appears to hang tens of metres above the water, ready to spill into the sea at any moment.

In reality, the height difference is about 30–40 metres, but the effect is so impressive that it has become one of the most iconic views in the Faroes.

How to reach Sørvágsvatn?

  • The lake is located on the island of Vágar, very close to the Faroese airport.

  • The start of the trail is near the village of Miðvágur.

  • The hiking route to the viewpoint takes about 1.5–2 hours one way – a light and pleasant walk, taking you along the lake itself.

  • Finally, you reach the cliffs above the ocean, where the view literally takes your breath away.

When is the best time to visit Sørvágsvatn?

  • Spring and summer (May–August) – long days, soft light, and green slopes.

  • Early autumn – fewer tourists, dramatic skies, and still pleasant hiking conditions.

However, the Faroes are renowned for their unpredictable weather. The wind, fog, and rain can change within minutes – part of the charm of this wild place.

What should you take with you?

  • Wind and rain jacket – regardless of the season.

  • Warm layers of clothing – the weather can change quickly.

  • Good hiking boots – the terrain can be muddy and slippery.

  • Camera or phone with a good camera – because you'll want to capture this moment forever.

The lake that changes your perception of the world

Sørvágsvatn is not just a beautiful sight. It's a place that makes you stop. Take a deep breath. Marvel at how perfect Earth can be when nature paints without human interference.

And most importantly – it reminds you that even in a world where everything seems discovered and explained, wonders still exist.
